Dealing with hemorrhoids – any advice? in Health ·
shadowsailor10 said:Hey everyone,
it’s me again. Looks like I'm dealing with an anal fistula. Does anyone have experience or recommendations for surgeons in Washington, D.C.?
Has anyone worked with Dr. Lastric or Dr. Filati? Thanks in advance.

Honestly, finding out I actually have a fistula was more of a shock than I expected—it started as these tiny little needle-sized holes.
I ended up back in surgery through the ER. The only silver lining in this mess is that the perianal abscess basically popped on its own, so they didn't have to cut me open right then... luckily, he just gave it a little nudge with his finger, and now it's "flowing like a waterfall."

Current plan: soaking in a mild magnesium sulfate solution twice a day and waiting for my appointment with the digestive surgeon.

Best,

p.s.
Any advice on what comes next or what I should expect?

Hey everyone,
it's me again. Looks like I'm dealing with an anal fistula this time around. Has anyone here dealt with this before? Also, does anyone have recommendations for surgeons in Washington, D.C.?
Specifically, has anyone worked with Dr. Lastric or Dr. Filati? Thanks in advance!

I’m with you on that. I definitely need to go out and get some second opinions. I was seen by a general surgeon, and honestly, maybe my ten-year history with ulcerative colitis threw them off the scent,
so wasn't he looking specifically for a fissure?
Anyway, I've been on Klavocin for six days now, and I'm thinking about grabbing another round of it.
The bleeding is just spotting at this point, and my temp hits about 99 degrees every couple of days in the evening,
but man, the pain when I walk is still there. It gets so bad after a little while that I start limping on my left leg.
I'm trying the conservative route—cleaning up after every bathroom trip, using Hemopropin ointment, drinking tons of juice and fluids, and soaking flaxseed in water for 12 hours before using it.
Thanks for all the advice and the support, especially Karen Thompson10.🙂
p.s.
The worst part is nobody actually gave me a straight diagnosis. Instead, they just handed me the Klavocin and were basically like, "here, enjoy this..." 🙂
Between you guys and everything I find on Google, I'm doing the best I can to manage this.
Best to everyone,

Karen Thompson10 said:I don't even know what to tell you. Everything I wrote was stuff my doctor told me, especially regarding the fever. I saw two different doctors and heard the exact same story.
To be fair, they told me I had really sensitive tissue too, but they could also see a fissure. Maybe you really do have a different diagnosis.
The doctor I saw was a general surgeon, though—I'm not sure if all proctologists are surgeons too. 🤷
Switch up your proctologist; that’s what saved me. One guy was just selling me a bunch of nothing, but the next one actually fixed me.
If I've learned anything from all this, it's to ALWAYS get a second opinion. One doctor is a hero to one person and a total nightmare to someone else.
And look, none of us exactly went looking for "butt issues," but when it hurts, you gotta get it sorted... 😁

Karen Thompson10 said:That sounds like a textbook anal fissure to me! They usually come with high fevers and intense pain. Plus, you mentioned a little cut. Honestly, meds aren't going to fix this—it needs actual treatment. If you ignore fissures, they just spread, which is why they're dangerous; they can turn into way worse stuff, like a fistula. Just Google it. You said you saw a doctor, but did you see a proctologist? If nobody actually examined you properly, they're basically just guessing. Go see a specialist.

And yeah, a fissure almost always comes with what people call a "sentinel hemorrhoid" right nearby, so everyone assumes the pain is coming from hemorrhoids. Sometimes that little cut is super hard to spot, which is exactly why you need doctors.

I wrote a bit about the issues I dealt with back in May last year. A similar thing flared up again over Christmas, so after the holidays, I went to see a specialist...
My GP sent me to digestive surgery, where a surgeon performed a digital rectal exam... then sent me off to a gastroenterologist. There wasn't even a single mention of a fissure in the report!! And apparently, my situation isn't even a surgical case; instead, they're focusing on mucosal issues and inflammation, etc., etc. Not to mention, I almost died of embarrassment during the exam... So now I'm just confused. Are "proctologists" surgeons? Because right now I'm stuck in limbo. My gastroenterologist can't make sense of anything in the results either, and they're saying they'll request a follow-up with a proctologist once the inflammation goes down. And believe me, I am NOT looking forward to having to deal with this every single month. lab: WBC 16.7, CRP 80

thanks in advance

Do some Googling. You said you saw a doctor, but did you see a proctologist? If nobody gave you a real exam, you're basically just guessing at a cure. Go see a specialist.

And yeah, a fissure is almost always accompanied by what's called a sentinel hemorrhoid right next to it, so people totally mistake the pain for hemorrhoids. Sometimes that little cut is super hard to spot, which is why you need the pros.

Thanks Karen Thompson10, I'm totally with you on that.
I did a little digging on fissures online and found a few more symptoms I've been dealing with,
like cramps, irritation, and even those high platelet counts...
I haven't seen a proctologist yet, just my regular gastroenterologist who's been managing my
UC-s... if things don't start looking up, I'm definitely hitting up a proctologist.

thanks again

Hey everyone,
I've been dealing with ulcerative colitis for about 10 years now. I thought I knew my pain tolerance limits, especially with the occasional inflamed hemorrhoid,
but then two months ago, things went south. A hemorrhoid—pretty sure it's an external one since it's right on the edge—basically burst. I had some heavy bleeding for five days and spent about ten days running a low-grade fever every evening (around 99.5–100°F), so I ended up on antibiotics for three weeks.
My gastroenterologist has been keeping a close eye on me...
Between staying super clean, drinking tons of fluids, having some fruit compote, and using homemade castor oil along with Hemophagen ointment, I'm doing better. But man, there's still this painful little wound on the hemorrhoid that just won't quit...
I'm going to give Pilex tablets a shot. I'll be heading over to Europe soon, so I'll let you guys know how much they cost.
For context, Detralex tablets (30 count) go for $22 over there, but here in the States, they're $40..
I've pretty much read every single thread on this site and a bunch of other forums, so I’ve actually put together a list of some alternative hemorrhoid therapies I stumbled upon...
Wishing you all the best and a speedy recovery!
