Dealing with hemorrhoids – any advice?

I would appreciate any thoughts you might have. About 10 months ago, I noticed blood in my stool for the first time after returning from a trip to India. Since then, the same thing has happened a few times. Most recently, a few days ago, I had some hard stools and pain during bowel movements, and there was a significant amount of blood coating everything. Also, about six months ago, I felt some protrusion in the anal area after going to the bathroom. What really worries me are the pains on the left side of my abdomen and the fact that my bowel movements are inconsistent—mostly loose, occasionally formed, and rarely hard. I am 26 years old, and I honestly don't know if this is just hemorrhoids or something much worse. I guess I am just afraid to go for an exam because I am scared of hearing bad news.
