Dealing with hemorrhoids – any advice?

I need some advice. I developed an external hemorrhoid about six months ago. It was just one, so I ignored it. Every once in a while it would get inflamed, but then it would clear up in two days. Well, two weeks ago, suddenly I have three or four of them. I can't even count how many there are. The pain was absolutely hellish. The pain eventually stopped, but they're still there, just hanging there like extra skin. My appointment with a specialist isn't for another three months. What am I supposed to do until then? There’s no bleeding, and my bowel movements aren't hard. I’ve never had any issues with my digestion before. I've been using various ointments, but I don't see any real change. What does a specialist exam actually look like? Is it enough if they just take a look? I'm 27. Thanks.
