Dealing with hemorrhoids – any advice?

I had an external hemorrhoid about the size of half a pinky finger burst and bleed all over last night—it basically just flared up out of nowhere. Since then, I’ve been spotting a few drops every time I go. It hasn't stopped yet. What have you guys used to successfully stop the bleeding?
And just to be safe, my wife thinks this amount might be a bit much (she's comparing it to a menstrual cycle)—would you agree?
