Dealing with hemorrhoids – any advice?

I've been dealing with this lump internally for about a year and a half now. I can feel it when I touch it, and I get this stinging sensation quite often, plus there's blood on the toilet paper. In the beginning, the bleeding was actually heavy enough that it would drip right onto the toilet bowl, though it’s calmed down a bit—now it's mostly just a fair amount of blood on the paper when I wipe. I haven't really done much about it yet; I tried using some Hemomax for a bit and only recently started changing my diet. How dangerous is it to just ignore something like this for this long? I have to admit, I'm pretty embarrassed to even talk about it, let alone actually go see a doctor.
