An SFV is essentially a Simple file Verification file used to confirm that another file—it doesn't necessarily have to be an archive—is both intact and authentic. There are plenty of little utilities out there designed specifically to run these checks...
The SFV format relies on a CRC algorithm which is generally reliable enough, though there are certain types of modifications that CRC might fail to catch (not that I have any idea how one would pull that off, nor do I care to find out, nor do I know anyone who actually spends their time doing that)...
MD5 is a different beast entirely, and I wouldn't argue that it isn't widely used, but you typically find MD5 hashes embedded within encrypted files rather than as standalone files. As far as I'm concerned, MD5 is practically unhackable...
