Spent some time scrolling through this place and figured out that "real-world application" is just the big boogeyman haunting this martial arts forum.
Like, we’re all waiting for some "real situation" to drop so we can finally judge who actually put in the work at the gym and who was just playing dress-up.
Just curious—how many of you in the last, say, five years (and I don't mean cops, repo men, or bouncers...) have actually been in a spot where things got real? Like, a fist flying toward your face and someone ending up bleeding, whether it was you or them.
Just purely statistical...
I want to know where the fantasy ends and reality begins.
Cheers!
About ten days ago, I had my high school graduation. Around 1 AM, two buddies call me up: "Man, they're messing with NES (my best friend from class), come help us out." I'd had maybe five beers, felt a little buzzed🙂 (not really a drinker), and headed out in front of the hotel. There were three guys there (it wasn't even their graduation🙄), and they were picking fights with my friends. My boys were totally losing it, and I just had to listen to this guy born in '91, another from '90, and some dude my age ('88) throwing threats around.
I couldn't help myself; I've always had a short fuse. This kid born in '91 started yelling at me—something like "Stay out of this, man!"—and I snapped. He was sitting in a chair and tried to stand up to come at me, so I caught him with a front kick and sent him right back into the seat.
To make sure I wasn't just being some punk beating up a kid, I immediately told the oldest one: hey, if we need to settle this, let's go to the park. I didn't want to do it right there since some traffic cop happened to be passing by. He didn't say a word; he just lunged at me with a wild punch aimed at my head. Everything went on autopilot after that.
I slipped the punch, grabbed his arm, and executed a kata guruma throw. Once I was on top of him, he was flat on his back, and I started raining punches down on his head. Then I grabbed his arm and finished it with a juji gatame.
The cop was just standing there like a statue until that moment, then he finally moved to break us up. At that point, I was actually pulling on the arm trying to break it, but at the last second, I remembered I couldn't afford a felony if I wanted to get into the university academy I'm aiming for.
They eventually split us up. He could barely move his arm (didn't break it, though). A cop showed up, and I ended up getting hit with a fine, which I think was around $533. Even though it was self-defense, the idiots in the police department told me that once you disrupt public order, it doesn't matter who's defending and who's attacking.
Anyway, I'm chill about it.
