For instance, take the title. When you read the book, there's a comparison made between the white oleander and the women in the story—or maybe just Michelle herself: beautiful, but lethal. Watching the movie, I just didn't get it. I spent days wondering why the white oleander theme was even there. What's The Point? There are plenty of other metaphors out there...
The book is much more detailed and thorough than the film... I highly recommend everyone give it a read! I’ve definitely finished it three times by now. The movie doesn't even capture 50% of the book, though it is pretty well done, especially with Michelle Pfeiffer basically carrying the entire thing on her shoulders.

Regarding the "White Oleander" title, it refers to how Ingrid (the mother) killed her boyfriend using oleander poison by planting it in his house... I can't recall the exact specifics right now, but the book explains the reasoning much better, specifically regarding why they traveled to Mexico to get DMSO and such.
