Back in April, my son suffered an injury during sports where his medial epicondyle actually detached from the bone in his elbow. To put it in layman's terms, that’s the bony protrusion where the tendons responsible for rotating the hand left and right attach. We went to the hospital that very same day, only to be seen by some specialist orthopedic surgeon who essentially dismissed us. He put his arm in a cast for two weeks and insisted everything was perfectly fine and there was nothing to worry about. Of course, since then, nothing has been fine. We have cycled through several different specialists covered by Medicare—orthopedists and physiotherapists—and every single one of them seems to have a completely different theory. One tells us, "He should have had surgery immediately." Another claims, "All he needed was a tiny screw and it would have been fixed," while someone else just shrugs and says, "Well, it's done now, what's done is done." Some even suggest he can go right back to playing handball, while others tell him he needs to say goodbye to the sport forever. Meanwhile, my fifteen-year-old kid can't even manage two pull-ups on the gym bars without experiencing sharp pain in his elbow.
If I try to go through Medicare at the Salat clinic, I'm looking at waiting until March 2010 just to get an appointment. I’ve been considering going privately instead, but honestly, I have no idea where the best place would be. From what I’ve heard, the private sector is a complete mixed bag. You have some top-tier facilities with excellent service and fair pricing, but then you have those other places that are cheap simply because they rush you through—I'm talking about a consultation that lasts barely six minutes. $200).
