Honestly, just mentioning you've been around someone with an itchy rash is usually enough... any dermatologist will likely send you straight for immediate testing.

Thanks for the help, everyone. Honestly, I’m not sure if I can actually swing getting another referral. The dermatologist I saw earlier was through my insurance—I got an emergency appointment because I was so worried about this itching, but he didn't think skin testing was necessary to be certain. I doubt my GP will hand out a new referral since they usually defer to a specialist's findings. I'll try, though. Does anyone happen to know if any of the doctors over in Manhattan take private patients? It might be easier to just book something directly. Thanks again for all the info.

Do I need a referral, or is it private? Should I book an appointment ahead of time, or can I just show up and wait? And do they run the test as soon as there's a suspicion of scabies, or do they have to be "certain" during the exam first? Hey everyone—does anyone know a dermatologist anywhere in the US who actually has the intuition to spot scabies when the symptoms aren't super obvious? I’m looking for a specific name and clinic, or honestly just any really thorough dermatologist who won't dismiss you after a 30-second glance. I'm willing to travel anywhere in the States for this. Basically, I suspect I might have it because I found out some people I was hanging out with a month ago were positive, even though my symptoms aren't screaming "scabies" yet (though I do have a rash and occasional itching). My current dermatologist basically brushed it off as just a standard rash or a sun allergy—the whole appointment, including the chat and writing a prescription for some pricey cream, barely hit the five-minute mark. He looked at my back for maybe 30 seconds, tops. It's incredibly frustrating that something this contagious and serious is treated so flippantly when someone has a legitimate reason to be worried. I need someone who will actually listen and do a proper exam. Of course, I'm hoping for a negative diagnosis, but I want that to come from a real evaluation because the last thing I want is to accidentally spread this to everyone around me.
