Dealing with bronchitis? in Health ·
Good afternoon,

shortly:

My 3-year-old boy has been struggling with a deep, hacking cough for over a week now.

During those first two days, he threw up twice. He hasn't had a fever—it’s just this relentless cough. We headed to the pediatrician last Thursday, and they diagnosed him with viral bronchitis, prescribing a "bronchodilator for oral inhalation" (salbutamol HFA 100 mcg). So, he’s been using the inhaler since Thursday. Then yesterday (Saturday), he was just playing normally in the living room when his nose suddenly started bleeding. It wasn't a massive amount at first. But then during the night—around 3:00 AM this morning—he started coughing so violently that I went to check on him, only to find him lying there in a pool of blood (coming from the same nostril again—the left one). So, he’s had two significant nosebleeds in the last 20 hours or so.

To add some context—and maybe this is relevant—I actually dealt with nosebleeds myself until I was about 7 or 8 years old. Back then, they used some kind of wire procedure at the military hospital in Boston that basically "cauterized" my nose (at least, that's how the doctors phrased it). My son has always been prone to nosebleeds, which is why we’ve had a dehumidifier running constantly in his room.

I'm trying to be as precise as possible here—maybe I'm rambling a bit, but when it comes to your kid's health, I feel compelled to lay out every single detail, even the seemingly trivial stuff that might matter to a specialist.

What is going on? What should I do, and more importantly, what should I avoid doing?

I'm not certain if there's any connection, but just for my own peace of mind, I should mention he received the H1N1 flu vaccine about three weeks ago, and there were no complications following that. And please—I am begging you—spare me the lectures along the lines of, "What kind of father vaccinates his children..." and all that nonsense.

Thanks in advance.
