The Phantom of the Opera

AAA, The Phantom of the Opera.
Personally, it’s my absolute favorite, right up there with Les Misérables. I’m a huge fan, though I first "met" Phantom through the 2004 movie version. I was completely obsessed—total fangirl mode for a while... But honestly? Looking back, the movie is pretty poorly made compared to the original musical. They really should have tried harder, especially since it's a film and they had way more tools at their disposal than they do on stage.
As for the cast, Gerard Butler isn't a professional singer, so I think his musical performance was actually quite good, though I can't say the same for his acting. His portrayal didn't scare me at all, which is the problem. It should have. His Phantom wasn't scary or... well, crazy. And the Phantom is supposed to be insane. Jerry's version just lacks that edge of madness.
Emmy did an excellent job, in my opinion, because she captured how naive, vulnerable, and terrified Christine is. Musically, though, I think her voice is a bit weak for the role of Christine, even if she performed it well—not that we should ignore all those years of opera training she put in.
All in all, the movie is decent. I’d give it a 4, purely because I just love Phantom.
