Great, then I have one more question since I’m a total novice here. Once I actually get the referral from my doctor, what happens next? Am I supposed to just call up a facility that has the right specialist on staff and book an appointment myself?

So, here’s the situation: I’m based out of San Diego, but I’m going to school in Chicago, and I want to see a specialist up here in Chicago. How does that work? Do I need to switch my primary care physician to someone local here, or can my doctor back in San Diego just write me a referral for a specialist in Chicago?
