I got back out on the pitch yesterday, and honestly, everything felt alright, though it’s a bit of a struggle when I catch a glimpse of my toe; it looks pretty rough, to be honest. But once I get my cleats on, the pressure helps enough that I don't feel the pain quite as sharply. Aside from that, I’ve just been trying to be extra careful about how I strike the ball with that part of my foot. Mostly, I’m just aiming my shots with the inside of my foot or switching things up by using my other leg instead.
The thing is, the nail itself has turned this bruised blue color and looks somewhat deformed, almost like it’s drying out...

I hit my opponent with everything I had during a tackle.
He didn't feel a thing, but I could barely walk.
When I finally took off my shoe and sock, I actually got a bit spooked—anyone who’s ever had a nail ripped out knows how nasty that looks. My big toe nail was completely bruised and blue.
I had to take a break from soccer for about two months while the nail slowly started detaching from the toe.
Eventually, it just fell off without any pain.
The new one hasn't fully grown back yet, even though the old one came off at least six months ago.
So, when did you finally get back into the game, or at least start hitting the training sessions again?
How long was the total downtime for you?
I honestly don’t even know what to say; if I’m being truthful, I feel like just sitting down and crying—not because of actual physical pain, but just from the sheer frustration of my own stupidity..
I had actually stumbled upon an incredible deal on some Boeing cleats for only $50. They were a size 40 and 2/3, which is basically half a size smaller than my usual fit, but I figured they’d stretch out perfectly after a few training sessions and be just right..
But then, in a moment of total madness, I saw these other pair of cleats and decided I had to have them instead. I ended up returning the Boeing ones (an absolutely moronic move on my part) only to pay twice as much for these new ones—$100 flat..
For context, I usually wear a size 41, but after scouring every sporting goods store in town, all I could find were sizes 40 and 41 and 1/3. I remember reading somewhere online that soccer cleats tend to stretch quite a bit—sometimes up to two full sizes—so I thought it would be smarter to go slightly smaller to account for that expansion.. That’s exactly what I did, and man, did I screw up big time..
Now, my worst toe is taking the brunt of it—my big toe on my kicking foot. It’s pretty much certain that if I keep playing like this, I’m going to end up making a much more complicated mess of things..
The thing is, it doesn't even really hurt right now, but when I look at my big toe, it looks like a complete disaster. The nail looks like it's drying out; it's turned this bruised blue color and definitely isn't firm anymore... It feels like it's just desiccating, and I have this sinking feeling it’s going to fall off once it dries completely, and there’s absolutely no sign of a new nail growing in underneath..
Well, honestly, let it fall apart if it has to. Something new will eventually rise to take its place. Whether things break down or just evolve, life has a way of healing itself and moving forward regardless...
But what I really need to know is, am I actually cleared to keep playing soccer??
I’ve got practice scheduled for today, and right now, wearing my sneakers, I don't feel any real pain. That said, I do get a bit of a twinge if I land awkwardly or if I press down on my big toe through the shoe...
I have another pair of cleats that are a bit roomier and more comfortable, so I could try playing in those today, but the real question is: should I even risk it? I don't want to turn a minor issue into a major complication.
Yeah, I’m seeing the exact same thing on my end; every single person I've shown it to tells me it isn't going to peel off. Even some of my buddies who actually know their stuff say it shouldn't be a major issue. But honestly, I can't help but worry because I’m still out there playing soccer quite regularly, and I just can't shake the fear that things might take a turn for the worse...
So, what ended up happening with those sneakers?😉
I dropped about a hundred bucks on these cleats, and now I'm stuck with them—it feels like such a waste to let them just go to ruin, you know? I'm still wearing them, but I have this nagging feeling that I made a mistake and should have gone half a size up. Then again, when I tried on the larger pair, they felt way too loose, like they were just sliding around while my foot was spreading out...
If you don't mind my asking, how old are you?
They’ve spread out quite a bit, I suppose... I don't have any issues with the right shoe; it fits me perfectly, almost like it was custom-made. But the left cleat—which is actually the more critical one since I'm a left-footed player—just hasn't settled in quite right. It was honestly such an ordeal just trying to track down the right pair in the first place. I ended up driving all over Chicago several times because I was hunting for a very specific size (but that’s a whole other story entirely).
By the end of it, I sat there for at least half an hour, agonizing over whether to go with the slightly larger pair or the smaller ones. I eventually decided on the smaller size, following the logic that once cleats start stretching out, they can expand by a full size or even two compared to what's printed on the label....
Unfortunately, it looks like I made the wrong call, and I've gone and injured my toe....
Hello there,
I was hoping I might be able to get a little help or perhaps some advice from you all.
So, I’ve ended up with this massive bruise on my big toe—well, more accurately, the nail itself has turned completely dark. I recently picked up a new pair of Nike cleats, and following the usual logic, I went a half-size smaller since they tend to stretch out over time to provide that perfect fit. However, things didn't quite go according to plan with my left foot, which happens to be my dominant foot on the pitch. After playing just two or three matches, I felt this sudden, excruciating pain in my toe, and shortly after, the nail turned deep blue. The sharp pain actually subsided after a few days, but the discoloration hasn't budged at all; it stays stubbornly bruised. I decided to keep playing since the actual aching had stopped, but the nail remains discolored through it all.
Now, about two or three weeks have passed, and while the color persists, it feels as though the nail has somehow... died? It feels lifeless. To make matters worse, when I went to trim my nails the other day, I accidentally clipped a bit too deep, and now that old pain is starting to flare up in my toe again...
How can I tell if the nail is still functional, or how will I know when a new one is actually going to start growing in?
Is there anything specific I should be doing to help this injury heal properly?
I truly appreciate any insight or answers you might have.
