Budget printer recommendations? in Computer Peripherals ·
Joseph Carter9 said:Hello,
I currently own one of the most budget-friendly printers out there (the Canon IP1500), but unfortunately, it finally kicked the bucket earlier this year (after about 5 years of exhausting service).

Now I need to pick up a replacement in a similar ballpark.
Mainly, I just need it for college; most of my printing is just standard text documents.

It would be ideal if both the unit itself and the color ink were relatively cheap. With my old setup, the total cost for all my replacement inks hovered around $20-$10.
I’m turning to you guys for help because every online shop I’ve looked at only carries about 10 models, and 8 of them are way over my $1 $167 limit.
Print speed isn't exactly a priority for me.

Max price for the printer = $167
Max price for replacement ink = $20 total

It isn't really that the machine itself wore out from hard work; rather, they essentially programmed it to reach a ceiling after five years or a specific number of print cycles, whichever comes first.
Just look at what SM says regarding their MP550 model.

Otherwise, the thing probably could have kept chugging along for another fifteen years if they hadn't built it this way. But hey, welcome to our modern consumer society, right?
