Thanks to my voters, kisses all around. I voted for Megan Gray4 because she stuck to the prompt best and showed actual stylistic range. My other picks for the second vote were driftingmarlin44, hiddenmarlin14, Grace Sanders24, and Accalia for sheer guts. I ended up picking driftingmarlin44 because they also captured that masquerade vibe, the dreaming, and the self-irony perfectly.

The clowns in the headquarters are putting on their usual show.
They drop new numbers every single day. It’s like they're running a damn lottery.
Let the people stay silent behind their paper shields.
Waiting patiently for that needle to hit.
Hoping to dodge illness is one thing. Actually doing it is another.
The tremors will settle down eventually.
They’ll probably get new chimneys.
Can we finally go back to attending parties like normal?
Ladies and gentlemen, an unforgettable performance.
This is nothing but a masquerade.
Puppet theater. Marionettes.
There’s nothing quite like being right there on that stage, center stage at the gala. It's an experience you just can't replicate.
Back in my own house again, without having to pay a single toll.
Start acting like real actors. Wear your masks convincingly.
Walk onto that stage with confidence.
Let the ground shake beneath you.
This is an absolute, total embarrassment.
There’s no reason to be nervous.

With the last of my strength, I struggle to subtract.
My fingers are stiff.
Slowly, my breath fails. Oxygen is leaving my lungs.
I subtract. I manage it, but with every movement, I feel consciousness slipping away.
A flash! I can't tell if I'm still alive, but I keep subtracting.
Another flash!
Suddenly, someone else is subtracting beside me. Is it a hallucination?
No! I see a masked woman with blonde hair, subtracting!
She’s surrounded too. She grabs my hands and tells me, "Hang on!"
"Get up! Subtract! Subtract, Josh!"
The enemies are slowly backing off. She drives them away, subtracting with a force unlike anything I've ever seen!
I ask her softly, "Who are you? Where did you come from, and why the mask?"
She says nothing. She just keeps subtracting!
