I’m honestly lost here. Did they really prescribe you an antibiotic even though your swab came back clean? 😕 🤷

I can’t even step foot near a Shake Shack without feeling nauseous, so I wouldn't know.

He prescribed an antibiotic that I already know won't work because I've taken something nearly identical before. Oh well... anyway, my allergy testing is scheduled for next week... just one thing after another.

😳 It honestly sounds like you're just praying for a miracle at this point. 🤣

Did you get a culture done? I seriously don't get why they dodge such simple, effective tests. 🤷

Look—if they run a culture with a sensitivity test (in case it's bacterial), there's no way they give you the wrong antibiotic. Right now, if the strain is resistant, you could spend a whole year on meds and see zero results. Demand that they do it next time if the treatment doesn't kick in. You know how it goes—take charge of your own health... 😁

Terry Fowler2 said:mellowlynx, thanks for the advice 🙂 but I'm not sure if I should continue with the antibiotics since everything just passes right through me. :S Is it possible the medication isn't working quite as intended?

No problem at all. 😉 You really ought to finish the full course exactly as prescribed until you can touch base with your doctor on Monday. The only exception is if you start experiencing severe side effects—in that case, stop immediately.

By the way, there's a Medication Referral Center over in Chicago. You can give them a call anytime to ask questions about any medication you're taking. 😉

Terry Fowler2 said:I've been eating some yogurt, but I'm feeling quite nauseous and have actually vomited. My doctor has already finished for the day, so I'm unsure whether I should push through with the antibiotics or stop, though I really ought to continue since I'm dealing with a bladder infection. 😢

You really should consider taking probiotics. They're those beneficial bacteria, conveniently packaged in supplement form. Highly recommended! 😍There are some truly excellent probiotics out there—take VitaFit Premium, for instance. It’s pricey as hell, but honestly? It works wonders. They offer various pack sizes, so don't let them talk you into the most expensive one; you probably won't need that much volume. You can always go with Linex instead. It's way more budget-friendly.

The downpour will let up any minute now. 😉

I have thyroid issues, so swallowing can definitely be an issue for me!

As for reflux or acid—never been a problem for me. I actually only found out about it when I lost my voice once.😉

🤔 Hmm... I haven't lost my voice yet, but fine—I'll go ahead and check both things.

silvergardener472 said:Can the third tonsil be inflamed even if it isn't enlarged? Could that be the cause of both the drainage and the sinus inflammation?

🤷 I'm curious about that too.

Grace Lewis6 said:I deal with chronic laryngitis and acid reflux, which basically eats away at my vocal cords. I end up losing my voice or sounding raspy all the time. 🙄
It's either sinus drainage hitting my larynx or stomach acid corroding them... just wonderful. ☕

They're using a fiberoptic scope right now to check the current state of my vocal cords. 🤷
Every so often, they prescribe me some pills for my stomach—you know, for the acid...

But I think I've managed to cut down on the gastric issues through my diet lately, so now I want to tackle the sinus problems too... I'm really curious about that adenoid issue; I'll definitely ask about it at my next appointment.
I might even need to have both tonsils removed. It feels like I'm constantly catching colds—maybe three or four viruses a year, plus at least two throat infections... and stuff like that.
Plus, I've got nose surgery coming up eventually 😳 because of a deviated septum. Brrr...

A model once suggested to me that adenoid issues might be caused by reflux, but I doubt it. I almost never get heartburn or any major discomfort, except for when that specific area gets severely inflamed. Sometimes I even get this metallic taste, like blood is trickling down from above. Like an abscess bursting or something. My throat and vocal cords are perfectly fine.

Regarding swallowing issues, they told me it could be thyroid-related, so they're having me checked out. 😕 Fine, maybe it is, but I don't get their specialist logic—first they send you to a bunch of other specialists to rule out various things, and only then will they actually do a detailed exam themselves. Instead of doing everything upfront and then referring you out if a diagnosis is ruled out. 🤷 Pure idiocy. Or they're just being lazy. 😳

For example, my dermatologist sent me to get blood work first just to rule out diabetes before checking my hormones... instead of just sending me for a simple swab to see if it's, you know, 🙂staph or not.

Are we supposed to be a wealthy nation if our healthcare system can afford to pay for all these useless tests?

they pull your tongue down with gauze and look at your throat with a light... yeah, super high-tech, I totally agree 🤣

I have to go through that constantly ☕

I haven't a clue what that's called. All I know is my resident was a total model—super handsome, but still... 😬 I've never heard of stroboscopy before, but based on your description, it sounds like something I've seen on TV. Doesn't seem too scary.

So? Any actual improvement since you started going for those fiberoptic exams all the time? ☕ Seriously, they send you in there like it’s the cure itself rather than just a diagnostic tool. 🤣 Is it because they can't pinpoint the issue, or... 😕 ?

silvergardener472 said:Seriously, please tell me how they actually check those tonsils... is it some kind of probe or what??? And as for the doctors... they are a total disaster. I honestly learn more through the internet than they ever tell me. I'm completely disillusioned. It feels like they couldn't care less about the patients; they just don't have any skin in the game. I don't get it. You should actually love what you do, otherwise why bother with medical school and all that specialization? 🤷

Your intuition is spot on, and you aren't alone in feeling this way. Like a certain politician might say—they just don't care, because the paycheck hits their account every single month.

When they checked me, it was so poorly done that they practically caught my tongue with a gauze pad, using a dental mirror and a light pointed upward. They only saw what they could see in a split second, mostly because being poked like that made me want to gag. Real cutting-edge medicine right there. ☕

A few years back, I had a brutal sore throat that I didn't see a doctor for, and since then, I've dealt with swallowing issues, problems with the third tonsil, nasal breathing issues, and trouble with my sinuses and throat. I truly believe the only right move would be a proper scan, maybe a CT or something similar, because my symptoms are severe. But apparently, it's cheaper for Medicare to pay for several useless, cheap appointments than to cover one expensive, proper diagnostic test. 🙄

We don't need a healthcare reform. We need sanctions for incompetent doctors. Without accountability, they simply don't care about the patient's pain.

silvergardener472 said:For as long as I can remember, there’s this constant feeling of something draining down my throat. My sinuses are fine—no headaches, no runny nose—but this drainage is causing terrible bad breath, and I'm at my wit's end. Is it possible for an adult (20 years old) to have issues with their adenoids that cause this kind of drainage? It feels like mucus is collecting right behind my soft palate and then I just swallow it. I saw an ENT today, but he was incredibly dismissive. He checked me out very casually, noted a deviated septum, said my sinuses seemed okay, and then just blamed some chronic inflammation. He prescribed Hexoral mouthwash and ten days of Septolete. Honestly, his explanation makes zero sense to me. Basically, I need to know if adenoid issues happen in adults since kids deal with them all the time. Please help!

silvergardener472 said:So, I actually saw a specialist a few days ago... what a disaster. I don't think he took me seriously at all. I'm convinced the issue is my adenoids; my tonsils seem perfectly fine. I doubt it's a sinus infection because I don't have the usual symptoms like headaches or congestion. The bad breath has to be coming from that drainage. My teeth are fine, and I even saw a gastroenterologist—everything there was normal too.
My only option left is to get a new referral and find a different ENT. Any recommendations??
The most frustrating part is having to handle everything myself. Doctors seem so indifferent. They just give you a blank stare, and then I end up searching the internet, where people like you actually provide more help than the professionals do.🙄

This is almost exactly my situation. I was at Mayo Clinic, seen by a resident, and besides the adenoid issue—which he insisted wasn't even that enlarged (if it's causing this much trouble, it's definitely too big!)—I suspect I have staph in my nose. For the last two years, I've had intense itching around my nose and pustules that I haven't dealt with since puberty. I told him that, and he just brushed me off and scheduled me for sinus surgery without even doing a swab, claiming "folliculitis has nothing to do with sinuses." Then they act shocked when MRSA pops up in a hospital. 😠

I'm also planning to seek a second opinion. Sometimes it feels like being a doctor in America is the easiest job in the world—nobody is ever held accountable for mistakes, and no one gets fired for being a bad physician.😠
