GPU Buying Guide - (Read first post) in Desktops ·
coastaltrucker33 said:Hey everyone, I could really use some advice.
I'm thinking about picking up a new graphics card to give my PC a bit of a boost.
Mainly, I play Bad Company, Battlefield Vietnam, and other shooters.
I'm stuck on which card would actually be a good move for me, so I'm turning to you guys.

My current specs:
Intel Core2Duo E8400, 3.0GHz (overclocked)
MSI P35 neo motherboard
2 GB DDR2 - 800 MHz
NVIDIA SLI Radeon HD4870 (RV770) Gainward 1024mb
400W Antec power supply

Basically, I'd swap this card out for something better based on what you recommend.
Along with that upgrade, I'll definitely be adding another 2GB of RAM...

Or should I just leave everything alone except for the memory, then build a whole new rig later?
Thanks for the help!

If you ask me, don't touch this setup for another year, and then maybe...
A new GPU won't actually give you much of a boost here—it's just not worth it.

That's what it says..
One last question..
My power supply says max 305W, but then there's some peak rating around 400W... I'm honestly not sure which one is the real number..

Anyone know?

crimsonstag84 said:The Nvidia GTX 460 is noticeably more powerful than the Nvidia GT 430, there's about a 20% difference here. 🙂

It's almost catching up to the Nvidia 8800 GT; the Nvidia GT 430 is definitely a step down. 😉

Nobody even knows what kind of power supply he's running, and that Nvidia GTX 460 needs at least 20 amps on the +12v rail.

Jose Ruiz2 said:Is it worth picking this up for such a low price? I found this listing on eBay for an ATX power supply between 550W and 650W.

This is a King Power power supply.
King Power belongs in that same "avoid at all costs if you don't want to fry your PC" category due to its generally poor build quality.

cosmicfox31 said:So, how about the AMD Radeon HD 5670? Is it any good for gaming on a 17'' monitor at Medium-High settings?

The VGA PowerColor AMD Radeon HD 5670 1GB DDR3, 128bit DX11!!! 115 miles

You won't need anything better than that for a 17" screen.

cosmicfox31 said:Hey everyone. My old HD 4850 512 MB just kicked the bucket, and since I'm currently stuck using a friend's 8600, I need to grab something new ASAP.😁

I've got my eye on the NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450, so I'd love to hear what you all think about it.

Specs: AMD Athlon x4, 4 GB DDR3, Fortron 500 W.
It's strictly for gaming.

I'll probably pick it up from one of these two shops: www.plus.ba or www.genelec.com

🙂

What kind of budget are we looking at?

You just can't find any more Nvidia agp on the market!

If things go your way, you can just drop the price by $17 until you finally get rid of it. 😁

Just kidding, but maybe start at 350 and see how it goes; like I said, it's easy enough to lower the price if nobody bites. 😉

It still beats the ATI 3650 in terms of performance, $180 but the drivers are a total disaster.

I'm thinking of starting at about $350.

What’s the current market value for an old Nvidia 7800gs agp with 256mb gdd3? It's about 4 years old now. Back then, it was $667.....

Don't go any lower than 460.

Anything else worth mentioning? Don't worry about the power supply if it's weak; I'm planning on swapping that out too if necessary.

I haven't been checking much lately, but my current card is dying on me so I need an upgrade. Which of these would you recommend and why? Or should I look for something else entirely?
ps... it's for gaming

Casey Long2 said:I wouldn't necessarily agree with that. Just because a lot of people happen to own those monitors doesn't mean they're actually the most common ones out there. The latest Steam Hardware Survey just dropped. He claims that 1680*1050 is the most common resolution right now, but looking at the monitors hitting the shelves these days, 1920*1080 will probably take the top spot pretty soon.

On the other hand, you’ve got this crowd of "gamers" obsessed with having 1 or 2 GB of VRAM and hitting some arbitrary 666 FPS cap, while they couldn't care less about actually using a decent resolution on a high-quality monitor. They're just incredibly cheap when it comes to the essentials.

Which countries is this survey about? America and Canada. 🤣

Bryan Evans77 said:thank goodness you realized the guy is running a 4650 with DDR2...

The HD5670 is just a budget gaming card, nothing more... and even then, it's pretty weak (not bad for basic tasks, but if you actually want to play games, it's junk).
But look at how much better it performs compared to the 46xx series.

Most users I see are sticking to 17" or 19" monitors. I agree on looking toward the future, but for right now.....

The 4650 and 4670 with DDR3 memory aren't actually that bad...

A GTS 450 paired with an Ironman is actually a perfect match.🤣
