Schizophrenia - General Discussion in Psychology & Therapy ·
Look, I’m pretty sure these newer antipsychotics don't actually cause depression. If anything, they help clear up those negative symptoms from schizophrenia and can even tackle depression if someone's dealing with that. I’ve even read that doctors prescribe them specifically to treat depression itself...

Wait, what do you mean you have tardive dyskinesia? "Tardive" literally means it shows up later, after you've been on the meds for a long time, so I’m a little lost here...? Are you still taking it or what? Look, maybe try switching to a different prescription, but don't just write off every single med out there... at the end of the day, do you actually want to feel better or not?

I think they made the right call because you can't just go around discriminating against people based on a medical condition... especially one that's totally manageable. If someone with schizophrenia wants to be a surgeon, why not? Would we strip a doctor's license just because they developed a condition after their teen years? I’m planning on going into the medical field myself, and honestly, my own health issues haven't slowed me down one bit when it comes to studying or hands-on work. The stuff > brought up doesn't even sound like typical teenage behavior, regardless of what you say... plus, we're just random people on the internet. If a doctor handed out that diagnosis, then that's what it is. We should take her word for it.

Aaron Bennett30 said:I’m circling back to my previous thread regarding antipsychotics, and as I’ve already stated, I simply have no idea what the deal is with that damned Seroquel... period.
I was only asking here to see if anyone could provide some insight on the medication Modem, but I managed to track it down and everything; I took my first dose yesterday, and today it has completely stripped away my will to live—it's devastating.

Look, I gotta be honest—hearing that someone loses their will to live just from taking one dose of a pill? I’m having a hard time buying that. Usually, those meds are actually supposed to help you find your spark again, not take it away. 🤷
Maybe it’s just pure bias against the medication?
Or maybe it’s just another symptom of that depression you mentioned feeling...

Timothy Wood38 said:What on earth are you all talking about? Since when did an "f" diagnosis become some sort of prerequisite for getting into college? Honestly, I have to say, both you and your doctor are talking nonsense here. If you actually care about where you end up working or what you study, maybe focus on getting some treatment first—not to mention finding a decent quality of life.

Look, sorry to burst your bubble, but some universities actually require proof that you aren't dealing with mental health issues—basically, they want to know you're mentally fit. I had to go out and grab that exact same kind of clearance just to get into my program, so honestly, I think they're doing the right thing by handling it this way.

Man, honestly, it’s probably for the best they didn't put that on your permanent record. Why let one thing kill your chances at picking a decent college later? 🙂 I really hope you get switched over to something more effective though, and that you guys can figure this whole situation out soon. 🙂

Aaron Bennett30 said:Hey everyone, I have one more question for you all, and all I'll ask is: Moditen? Prolixin? What’s the consensus on them?
Today my doctor prescribed that medication, and based on what I've been reading online, I'm feeling a little... uneasy.

I’ll give you an indirect answer: Aren't you more worried about the symptoms you're actually dealing with right now and where your head's going to be, rather than some side effects that might—or probably won't—even happen?

Never even heard of something like that, honestly not sure if there's even a connection here 🤷 My temperature feels totally fine to me...

Look, I’m not out here hunting for a disability check, but what kind of specific hoops do you actually have to jump through? Besides just being sick, obviously. Is it common for these claims to get tossed out? Because my take is that if someone is actively getting treatment, they can usually hold it together pretty well... I mean, nobody stays in a full-blown psychotic break 24/7 while they're dealing with an illness. Plus, for most other issues, there's a whole pharmacy of meds out there to keep things steady...

Spot on. It’s a messy situation. But maybe once they get burned, they’ll finally realize they can't just wing it without medication... though some people probably spend years living in total denial, basically just sabotaging themselves at this point.

Take me, for example. I stopped my meds once, got hit hard by the symptoms, and I haven't even thought about pulling that stunt again. Now I'm just living a normal life—thank God—totally symptom-free thanks to staying on my therapy. And honestly, I think this stability is here to stay, since I've been feeling this good for a couple of years now. 🙂

driftinggull21 said:1. Lexapro alone certainly won't yield significant improvement for true schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is treated with antipsychotics; antidepressants are introduced only extremely rarely, very cautiously, and on a highly selective basis.

2. There is no set rule. It is entirely possible for a period of good remission to last months or even years, while an acute phase might last anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks. Everything depends on how the patient responds to treatment.

I don't get why you're acting like it's weird that people can stay in remission for years. Honestly, if the treatment 🙂
is working right, I think someone could stay in a "normal" phase for decades.

I was on Zyprexa for a while and honestly, besides putting on a few extra pounds, I didn't deal with any side effects... but this Solian stuff? Never even heard of it. 🤷

Karen Garcia4 said:I couldn't agree more. If some distant relative from across the country suddenly cut you a check for $10,000 every single month for the rest of your life, believe me, you’d be looking at a psychiatrist pretty quickly... $133I wouldn't have had any time for that...🙂

I’d have all the time in the world, honestly. I mean, what’s the point of having money if I’m losing my mind and can't even afford to see a psychiatrist?

Whatever. I don't get why you're even bothering to dig through an encyclopedia that’s basically a relic from forty years ago—it's just a goldmine of outdated junk. Besides, at the end of the day, everyone walks into this world alone and leaves it alone, whether they're sick or healthy. We all have our own baggage to deal with.

Carl Jackson said:Can these episodes trigger constant conflicts with people at every turn? Or maybe a better way to put it: are people living with schizophrenia inherently aggressive—like, feeling like everyone is out to get them all the time—or does that only happen during an episode?

Yesterday, I found out by accident that she got into a confrontation with her TA at college, then with a nurse at the local clinic, and of course, both were completely unprovoked (she failed her exam because she didn't know the material, so it was the TA's fault; then at the clinic, the nurse just asked how she could help, and she snapped, "You can't talk to me like that" 😕?). These are just everyday, normal interactions. Those people aren't the problem.
I have no one to talk to. My husband told me he’s had enough of discussing this every single day. I can't even mention it to my dad because he’s still in total denial... and I can't even bring up seeing the neuropsychiatrist again to her. I don't know what to do.

They can be aggressive during an episode, sure. But when they aren't psychotic, they're just as aggressive or non-aggressive as anyone else out there.

Trust me, I’m taking this just as hard as you are. I just get the vibe you're wishing your ex had some tragic illness just so you'd have an excuse for why things went south.

I’ve read way too much about this, and honestly, I’ve lived through it myself. Plus, dealing with people struggling with this stuff is basically my daily grind during my studies. Just a friendly heads-up: don't go trying to play doctor and diagnose everyone you meet. But hey, if you need to do it just to get it out of your system, go ahead and 😉

Karen Garcia4 said:I'm not trying to defend anyone; I just think the behavior described could be interpreted in so many different ways. Honestly, I doubt even a licensed psychiatrist could give you a definitive answer based solely on what you wrote. There's just way too little information here...
@Mr Pringles gave a great response, if you ask me....

Look, I read the symptoms too, and yeah, it could go either way. But honestly? I’m leaning toward thinking the guy was just eccentric. John Perez8, there's really no point in obsessing over this when you haven't seen him since you guys broke up. And frankly, I don't think knowing if he actually has an illness is going to make you feel any better. Besides, you probably don't know enough about schizophrenia to play doctor here—especially since you're basing the whole diagnosis on him not making eye contact. 🤷

I used to be a total skeptic when it came to group therapy. I mean, at the end of the day, we’re dealing with a chemical imbalance, right? It's biology. I'm definitely not one of those people who decides to quit their meds on a whim—that's a fast track to disaster. For me, the medication is the only thing actually doing the heavy lifting. Like I told you before, I learned that lesson the hard way. My issues usually manifest as delusions—basically, my brain starts spinning stories that have zero basis in reality...
