I honestly can't shake the feeling that the diagnosis they gave my uncle wasn't even entirely accurate—mostly because he just accelerated the whole downward spiral with his drinking. It wasn't even "normal" alcoholism, either; he was essentially poisoning himself. This was ages ago, back when I was just a little girl, and I remember them putting him on some medication called Antibus, but he just kept drinking right through it until he finally lost himself completely. He checked all the classic boxes for schizophrenia, sure, but I still have these nagging doubts that the doctors missed the mark. Now, he’s stuck in a long-term care facility indefinitely, and his intellect has been completely eroded—it's heartbreaking, really, considering he used to be a highly skilled mechanical engineer. Now, he can barely read a basic sentence.

You honestly won't believe this... I have an uncle who lives with schizophrenia, and during one heated argument, someone actually turned around and called me a schizophrenic too. And we're living in the 21st century, for heaven's sake. That tells you everything you need to know about the stigma. People can be truly pathetic sometimes...
