Living with one kidney in Health ·
Is there actually a chance my mom might end up losing a kidney? It’s been a while, but she had a uterine tumor years ago—thank God they cleared that out—but I can't help thinking the radiation therapy back then might have caused some lasting damage to her kidney function. She’s scheduled for surgery tomorrow where they’re going to try a procedure involving a sort of temporary shunt or bypass to see if they can jumpstart the kidney's performance. If that doesn't work, the doctors are looking at a nephrectomy. This whole ordeal started a few years back. They've been trying this "test run" approach to see if the organ will stabilize, but apparently, this is the absolute last shot. They’ll monitor her for about a week to see if there's any sign of life from the kidney, and if not, it's gone.
I really appreciate you guys. If anyone has any insight or has been through something similar, please let me know. Honestly, how much life can someone actually live with just one kidney?
Thanks in advance!
