Man, I have no idea how I missed this. We'll dive into the details later, when things settle down...
Dežulović won me over forever with just three pieces he wrote about Zidane back in 2006. Honestly, those are the only newspaper clippings I’ve ever bothered to save. In a way, they even helped ease the trauma from that one infamous final.
I have to point out, though, that in these sports threads, things tend to loop endlessly; usually, it's just some ball still flying through the air while someone, somewhere, on some pitch, is still staring at 🤣
Bešker's columns used to be absolutely electric, though they seem to have lost some of that spark lately; still, he remains leagues ahead of almost every other journalist out there.
As for Tomić... I wouldn't even call his writing a column; it feels more like low-brow bathroom humor that only a certain subset of wounded egos would bother reading.
Dežulović, Pavičić, and maybe even Bešker too, though he’s lost a bit of his edge lately. That seems to be the standard formula for what works at Jutarnji. I also find myself reaching for Kuljiš, even if he does tend to get a little carried away with certain topics sometimes.
Of that entire group, Pavičić is the standout for me, particularly because of that knack he has for spotting subtle social trends and drawing clever parallels with events that seem completely unrelated on the surface.
EPH should technically lean slightly toward the left, or at least that’s what the new owner claimed; however, it functions primarily as a PR playground available to anyone if the boss isn't using it first. Personally, I found the endless praise heaped upon Mamić and Bandić during that first Sunday after the takeover absolutely nauseating. I haven't bought a single EPH publication since then.
By the way, when I caught the cover of the new Globus, I nearly lost my lunch:
You can probably imagine exactly what kind of article it turned out to be.

Why do I dig Dežulović? He doesn't obsess over facts, yet despite his obvious edge, he’s actually incredibly objective. Some people label him a communist or an anti-American, but the truth is, nobody can even counter his columns—mostly because there isn't a single bit of manipulation or factual error in them.
Of course, I find myself reading Raspudić out of curiosity too, and honestly, I’d probably pick up that mythical conservative daily as well if it actually offered any real quality.
It isn't that Jutarnji is anything special in terms of depth, but there simply isn't much competition left, and there are maybe two or three other outlets worth a glance.
@ James Anderson5
In my opinion, Večernji stays relatively balanced, but then again, if even a single "commie" gets involved, people immediately write off the whole publication as leftist propaganda.
Oh, absolutely; it’s much easier to just whine that the communists took over everything and held onto it all, effectively waving a red flag in everyone's face to stir the pot.
What I find most amusing, though, is seeing comments like Smrdežulović's, where the right-wing crowd whines about how America lacks a daily newspaper with a conservative, Christian Democratic slant. They act as if there’s this massive, urgent demand for one.
Well, if they're so desperate, someone should just go ahead and start one; then we can see if those "massive crowds" actually bother to buy it.
Personally, I don't pick up the Daily News or anything from Glas Koncil, because I have zero interest in filtering my news through such a narrow worldview. Honestly, who would ever want to read Smrdežulović's nonsense, and more importantly, who on earth is forcing anyone to?
Patrick Wright2 said:Who's really to blame the mosquitoes for being provocateurs? Honestly, I'd be perfectly fine letting them drain my blood as much as they want if they'd just wait until I was actually asleep. But those little bastards won't cooperate; they insist on buzzing right next to my ear until I finally lose my mind, flip the light switch, commit a tiny act of genocide, and then try to go back to sleep.
That is exactly how I feel about VB16.
And then people have the nerve to complain when the heavy machinery comes out to clear them away.
It’s just that the way people react toward cats and dogs feels so incredibly skewed...
Just imagine if your neighbor ate a dog, much like how things might happen in China, for instance. By tomorrow morning, that person would be the number one headline in the entire country.
Well, isn't it perfectly natural for us to feel this way about dogs and cats, considering we've shared our homes with them for thousands of years? Besides, the more complex and large an organism is, the more weight its life seems to carry, doesn't it? It makes us naturally more sensitive to the loss of such life.
Most people don't go out of their way to kill cockroaches or mosquitoes just for the hell of it; they do it because those things pose a genuine health risk.
If I ever saw someone actually taking pleasure in crushing a mosquito, I'd probably have to conclude they were a complete idiot.
To me, Seinfeld remains in a league of its own. I could easily binge an episode twice back-to-back without ever feeling bored.
What about those New Zealand vampires? They were actually quite decent; I went in with zero expectations, yet found myself laughing out loud several times, especially during the first half of the movie.
Looking at newer stuff, Silicon Valley shows real promise, and honestly, Erlich Bachman is the kind of kingly character we haven't seen in a series for a very long time.🤣
I also managed to watch S01 of The Leftovers, and in my opinion, it’s absolutely superb. Usually, with shows like this, you find yourself just devouring the plot to get through it, but here, I had no trouble at all with the pacing slowing down to allow for deeper characterization. Apparently, there’s some sort of reboot happening for the second season, which feels like a bit of a shame.
