We’re going to turn the FBI from this pathetic, pointless mess into a place that actually works for the Reddit community.

Below are our initial experimental settings, and yes, they’ll change. If an idea actually sticks, we might roll it out to other subreddits.

This draft for the new FBI applies to all new threads. As for the appeals process and the Moderation Team, everything stays exactly as it was. (Though, hopefully, we can evolve those into something that actually makes sense eventually.)

Note the minor tweak to the long-standing subforum name—it's now Messages, Wishes, and Comments. It needs to capture the spirit of this new FBI 🙂 (The original name was Messages, Wishes, and Greetings, but that acronym didn't work.)

Regarding moderation, here’s how we run things here:
  • Posts generally won't be deleted; instead, they'll just get moved to a single off-topic thread.
  • We will only delete posts if they can't be moved to the off-topic thread—things like insults, doxxing, harassment, or anything else on the Reddit prohibited list. We don't want that stuff visible.
  • We'll use emojis as the fastest way to give friendly warnings. Only yellow ones—meaning no points are issued.
  • A Ban will only happen if someone keeps disrupting discussions after being warned and ends up making too much work for the Moderation Team. That will result in a partial ban specifically from the FBI. It's easy enough to avoid, and honestly, anyone who gets one is being a massive pain. 😉Let's just say they're annoying.

FBI Advisory Board

We’re launching an FBI Advisory Board so users can actually have a say in how this subforum is run. These advisors will be drawn directly from the community to represent both the users and the platform itself. To be clear: they won't have any moderation tools.

The best candidates? People who truly understand this subforum and are actually passionate about making this place better. Think of advisors as potential future moderators. Everyone else is welcome to act as informal advisors by contributing to the designated threads.

The Board will tackle proposals, user requests, and feedback, while also helping resolve user complaints. Their job is to monitor moderator activity and ensure there's a fair distance kept between the staff and the community.

One major goal for these advisors is to kill the "us versus them" mentality—the old divide between moderators and users. We want to shift toward "all of us together." Moderation should be a service provided to the users, not something imposed on them.

Creative Department

The stuff above is just bureaucracy. This department right here? It’s the heart and soul of this sub-Reddit. We handle everything from starting threads and moderating discussions to pitching new ideas, launching projects, running experiments, and managing content...

That's all for now. 🙂

I suppose I could act as some sort of low-level creative consultant, given that I’ve spent enough time dealing with various members of the Moderation Team to know how they tick, though I won't be getting into specifics. Honestly, I actually ended up marrying a woman I met right here on Reddit; this place is basically woven into my DNA at this point.

Back between 2009 and 2014, I was just your typical, boring user, but since 2014, I’ve embraced a new version of "normal" that’s mostly just entertaining myself by indulging my own cynical urge to troll with a certain level of finesse.

I’ve only ever picked up a single red card because Phiber failed to realize just how utterly hollow my thread actually was, but I can forgive him for that mistake. As for the second one I received from rustydrifter10, well, I like to think she gave it to me out of love.

Best,

Maybe we could turn this thread into a dedicated space for users who are looking to step up into roles like moderators, advisors, expert consultants, deputies, community organizers, mentors, site administrators, or something along those lines.

It would be great if candidates could give us a quick introduction, allowing us regular users—the true lifeblood of this Reddit community—to toss out various questions so that from among the best offerings our site provides, we can pick out the absolute finest candidates. It’s perfectly understandable that some of these questions might get a little uncomfortable, isn't it? So, I'll go ahead and kick things off myself:

1 Adam Doyle63, I have a feeling you're someone in the second stage of life, meaning you're over 18; is that accurate?
2 Based on that lovely opening sentence of yours, I’d venture to guess you were once an active member of the old Democratic Party. Is that right?
3 Did you hold any specific rank during your service in the military back then, perhaps something like a corporal or a specialist?
4 Can you give us your word that if you become a moderator or an expert advisor here, you won't push any specific political agendas?

It would be pretty useful if candidates gave a quick rundown of who they are, so us regular folks—the true Reddit bottom-dwellers—can throw some questions their way and pick the absolute best from whatever this site has to offer. Naturally, I’m sure some of those questions might get a little uncomfortable. Since I've always had a knack for making things awkward, I'll go first:

1. Adam Doyle63, I’m getting the vibe that you’re an adult, presumably 18 or older. Is my intuition correct?
2. Based on that lovely opening sentence of yours, I’d bet you were once active in the old Democratic Party circles back in the day. Am I hitting the mark?
3. Did you hold any rank during your time in the military, maybe something like Corporal or Sergeant?
4. Can you give us a pinky swear that if you end up as a moderator or a specialized advisor, you won't spend all your time pushing specific political agendas.

I was definitely trolling with that post earlier this afternoon, 😁 but I suppose I should probably try to answer properly for once.

1. I am.
2. I started elementary school in '91, so I can do the math myself.
3. Refer back to number two.
4. Only sex.

Do these new moderation rules only apply to the FBI, or are they being rolled out across the other PDFs too? In theory, I actually dig the changes. We'll just have to see how things play out in practice. Good luck to the new advisors—hopefully, the rest of us can still jump in whenever we have some advice or ideas to share.

Those specific rules only apply to threads regarding the growth and development of the subreddit found right here on this sub. Any appeals or similar topics opened up in this area will still be handled according to our usual, old-school standard rules. 🙂

Look, Adam Doyle63, you strike me as a bit too young and maybe lacking the experience needed to handle any serious responsibilities here on Reddit.
But hey, if you're really looking to step up, perhaps you could start at the very bottom of the food chain and serve as an interim moderator assistant?
Consider this my vote.
Hang in there, buddy!

But hey, if you're looking for a foot in the door, maybe you could start at the bottom of the food chain as a temporary trainee for the Moderation Team.
Consider this my official vote.
Hang in there, Adam!

Thanks, that really means a lot coming from you. 🙏👍

EDIT: So, when exactly does our creative department finally get off the ground?

There really has to be some kind of hierarchy in place, doesn't there?
Scott Long71 is essentially the guardian angel of this entire Reddit community; he’s the one who actually built this whole place from the ground up.
The Moderation Team are nothing more than glorified sheepdogs out there, aren't they?
To everyone else out there, just a heads-up: the sheep on this Reddit are a different breed of animal entirely.
That’s it, folks. It’s over.

Honestly, Phiber started trolling the second he opened this thing up and gave Americans the green light to run wild. 🤣

We actually dealt with the exact same stuff back on Fantastica for a long, long time
Honestly, I’ve got some pretty bitter memories from those days. It was pretty ugly when they finally decided to hire someone to run the moderation after we'd been flying solo for a whole year 😬
I mean, even rustydrifter10 used to drop by and say hi

But hey, I guess God gives His little sheep a glimmer of hope for a better tomorrow

Scott Long71 said:The Advisor would basically be deep in the weeds of proposals, suggestions, and messages—basically acting as a mediator for user appeals. They'd keep an eye on the Moderation Team to make sure everything stays fair and keeps a healthy distance between the mods and the users.

Part of what an advisor actually does is break down that whole "us versus them" mentality—you know, that constant friction between the moderators and the community—and turn it into a "we're all in this together" vibe. It’s about turning moderation into a service that the users actually *want* and ask for.

Just seeing this now. Honestly? I'm exactly the kind of person you're looking for.🥳

Look, if I’m a total weirdo or if I’ve got a bit of a checkered past—I’m not gonna lie to you—but what you really need from me is my objectivity, my sense of justice, and a vision for a peaceful, cohesive community.

Liberty, equality, fraternity. 🙂

I tend to come up with some pretty wild, creative ideas more often than not. If you want actual progress, you're gonna have to work with me.🥳
