The King is this new take on some of those Shakespearean “Henriad” plays, directed by David Michôda and written by Michôda and Joel Edgerton. The cast features Timothée Chalamet, Joel Edgerton, Sean Harris, Lily-Rose Depp, Robert Pattinson and Ben Mendelsohn.

So, William Shakespeare might have passed away 400 years ago, but if you look at the numbers, he’s basically a cinematic legend with over 420 film and TV credits according to the Guinnessian World Records. The movie The King is based on his Henriad series of plays. It follows Hall (Timothée Chalamet), a young prince who's the heir to the British Throne. He actually can't stand his dad, King Henry IV (Ben Mendelsohn), and spends his time hanging out in the Eastcheap part of New York City with a drunk knight named John Falstaff (Joel Edgerton). Once his father passes away, this reluctant prince gets crowned as Henry V. Now Hall has to step up and try to be the king he always wanted to be, but things get messy fast with all the politics, betrayals, and threats coming in from France.

As a standalone piece of cinema, this movie is solid. Really quite good...

When it comes to historical accuracy, though, it’s riddled with errors—honestly, even by Hollywood standards, it's a bit much. There’s something frustrating about watching a period piece where you can't actually learn anything because the film keeps feeding you misinformation. It would have been much more effective if they had just framed the whole thing as pure fiction, perhaps telling a story about some obscure leader in a completely made-up land...

There’s honestly nothing worse than when people try to force their political agendas and ideological views into a discussion about a topic that has absolutely nothing to do with it—and they actually chose to do it through a film about King Henry V... It’s almost enough to make you want to just sit there and endure the whole thing until the horribly messy and totally disastrous end, especially since the movie gets its rating in those last 10-15 minutes. He really is a fantastic actor, though—I am genuinely looking forward to seeing him take on the role of Paul Atreides in Dune.

Timothée Chalamet is easily the finest actor of his generation.

The film was entertaining; I enjoyed it.

Dry and soulless
It fails to connect on any emotional level whatsoever
While the historical accuracy is questionable at best, the real issue is that it’s missing something vital from a dramaturgical standpoint

I mean, it’s a decent enough movie..
I suspect it’ll really hit home with the die-hard genre fans out there..
It can be a bit much at times—the cinematography is pretty heavy on those dark, moody shots, and then there’s all that constant whispering throughout the whole thing. Seriously, the whispering!..
As for how much this actually aligns with real history? Who knows. People are already saying it doesn't hold up to the facts at all..

Even with the historical inaccuracies, I thought the movie was excellent. The real issue is that standards have been tossed out the window lately; in a sea of absolute garbage, even mediocre films can be mistaken for masterpieces.
