Hey,

My current setup:
i3 6098p
msi rx 470
fortron 450w power supply
16gb ram 2133mhz
msi b150m pro-vd motherboard
120gb kingston suv400 ssd
1tb toshiba

I picked this up about 2 years ago with your help, but I'm ready to sell it all and upgrade.

I read that AMD is unveiling their new CPU lineup at CES. Should I wait for the reviews and benchmarks to drop, or just jump straight to a new Ryzen 5?

Regarding the motherboard—is an x470 necessary, or is a b450 enough?

As for GPUs, AMD is dropping new cards that should have great value, but right now I'm eyeing an rtx2080; I see some decent ones on Newegg for around $800.
For storage, I'll go with a 240gb SATA or NVMe SSD and a 2tb HDD.
RAM might be something like Corsair Vengeance RGB 16gb 2666mhz.

Since I don't have the cash to buy everything at once, I'll probably wait until early 2019. Does it make sense to buy parts gradually? Like, if I snag a good motherboard on sale during Christmas, then grab something else in February?
Also, will RAM prices drop? I assume GPU prices will fall, unless we hit another crypto boom.

Thanks.

p.s. I'm currently using a 1080p 60hz monitor, but I want to move up to 1440p 144hz.
p.p.s. I can order from various US online retailers and have them shipped to my buddy's place or directly here in the States.

AMD is just teasing the new processors at CES, though hopefully they’ll drop most of the specs and maybe a few demos. They might hit the market as early as May, but I suspect June or July is more likely. GPUs will probably follow a bit later than that.

I don't really see much point in ditching your current 16GB of DDR4 RAM just to buy another 16GB, unless you want to sell what you have now for maybe $110 and pick up a better kit for roughly the same price toward the end of February. Same goes for the HDD; I'd say just hang onto it.

As for buying parts early, you might get lucky and snag a Ryzen on sale to use as a temporary fix for about six months. If you're buying a motherboard, it's probably best to wait until right before you actually build or use it, just so you get the maximum warranty coverage.

Yeah, everything is just starting to get announced at CES.

They’ll probably drop the X570 chipsets too. Honestly, I’d rather wait for those announcements to see if holding out for an X570 actually makes sense.
If it doesn't, you can always grab an X470 or B450 sooner—they should be compatible with the newer CPUs anyway.

Look, the platform you're sitting on isn't garbage. It’s basically a decent stopgap solution (like using a Ryzen 3 1200), so I’d suggest waiting until we’re closer to the actual release of whatever your end goal is.

You could slowly hunt for parts that aren't mission-critical regarding warranty if you're planning to swap them later:
a case
RAM
a PSU

Bottom line: if you stumble upon some killer deals—maybe right after the holidays—you can just pick them up and slot them into your current rig.

AMD will likely announce their new cards soon. Doesn't mean they'll be your only option once they launch, but I'd still wait for at least a teaser so you can see what's on the table and let the prices settle.

What kind of power supply would you recommend?
As for RAM, I'm looking at either Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 16GB or G.Skill Trident Z.

I'm pairing it with an NZXT H500i case.

You’ve got plenty of options to work with—everything from Corsair to Fractal Design, plus the EVGA TX series and the Corsair RMx lineup, etc.

Honestly, since you aren't in any rush, you should just hold out for a solid deal. Don't feel like you're stuck with just a couple of choices.
