Good day,

The last time Uncle Strile put it like this:

This should work fine for the discussion on the history PDF. Just take it to him directly within that specific thread and let him handle the responses. If lonetrucker4 went overboard with the tags and bans in response to your inquiry, I can assure you that will definitely be rectified.

So, here we go again. In this latest iteration of the thread, I feel compelled to vent a little about how the moderator, Zoran Ostric, has been conducting himself lately.

First off, someone decided to "resurrect" my thread regarding the Jasenovac list on the official government website.

The way it was handled, they basically just moved about ten messages that weren't even off-topic into a new thread.

The conversation on Reddit regarding the historical record of the Jasenovac camp group remains predictably messy. People tend to get incredibly emotional about the Jasenovac topic, often ignoring the actual nuances of how things unfolded during WWII. It’s always the same pattern: someone brings up a specific point about the fate of Roma in NDH, and suddenly the entire thread descends into a shouting match. Looking at the discussions involving lonetrucker4 and driftingorca16, you can see how quickly the dialogue fractures when people stop looking at the documented facts and start relying on sentiment. There’s this persistent tendency to oversimplify the role of the Reich and its influence on local operations. Even when discussing figures like Ante Ciliga or the broader political shifts under Franjo Tuđman, the discourse lacks the measured approach required to actually understand the complexity of that era. It’s also worth noting how certain individuals, like Mladen Ivezić or even the perspectives offered by Slavko Goldstein, are used as conversational shields rather than being engaged with critically. Everyone wants to claim a piece of the historical narrative, yet very few seem interested in the actual academic rigor. It’s less about finding the truth and more about winning an argument on a message board. If we want any semblance of a productive debate regarding the Holocaust or the specific horrors of the concentration camp system, we have to move past these repetitive, circular arguments.

And all that effort just to drop an announcement about a single lecture. As if we don't already have a dedicated thread specifically for announcements.

When I asked for those moved messages to be restored—and suggested that maybe, just maybe, putting even a modicum of effort into starting a new thread with an actual intro wouldn't kill anyone—his response was a masterclass in inefficiency. He went through the whole routine: first the stonewalling, then the blatant ignoring, and finally, a flat-out refusal over in the Dear Moderator thread.

Then the thread starts getting hit with a few posts that aren't strictly off-topic, but they don't exactly fit the general Jasenovac topic either. When I requested that these messages be moved from the Jasenovac list to the general Jasenovac topic, lonetrucker4 responded like this:

I'm locking this thread. After the latest outbursts from the OP, it’s become painfully obvious that their only real goal here is to deny the victims. Besides, there’s nothing left to say. There is zero new information being brought to the table.

Can anyone besides Ostric honestly claim I’m "exclusively trying to deny the victims" based on anything I've actually managed to establish on this site?

On the Jasenovac topic, he went ahead and added this as well:

The "Noted victims list..." thread is being locked. It’s become painfully obvious that the OP and a certain clique of forum users have turned this into an outright smear campaign. Their only goal here is to deny the victims of the fascist regime by peddling fake theories, blowing things out of proportion, and leaning heavily on bias and blatant falsehoods.

Calling something "exaggerated" or "biased" might pass for a personal opinion, but throwing around accusations of "false premises" or "fabrications" is a much heavier charge—one that this person hasn't even bothered to back up with a single actual argument.

**********
In conclusion, I’ll be requesting that the Supermoderator reopen this thread.

Everything we’re seeing here is just classic behavior from the typical Reddit users and the moderator Ostric. I’ve warned people before that he regularly insults his interlocutors; his posts are just a repetitive barrage of labels like pro-/filo-/crypto-/fascist/Nazi, which he reserves exclusively for anyone who doesn't share his exact worldview. Whenever a post doesn't align with his preferences, the author immediately resorts to some kind of "Proustian propaganda."

It would be quite refreshing if the Supermoderator had a serious word with Ostric about his obsession with labeling dissenters. He needs to stop deleting on-topic, well-reasoned messages simply because they don't fit his ideological mold. Most importantly, he needs to quit locking threads without any legitimate justification.

The topics that Ostric considers ideologically vital—like WWII and the communist era—always end up playing out the same way. His ego essentially overshadows the entire discussion. Take the Jasenovac topic, for instance; ever since he took over as moderator, roughly every second post belongs to him. He acts like the ultimate "expert" and authority, while anyone who refuses to bow to that arrogance and attempts to engage with actual arguments is branded as pro-/filo-/crypto-...
Actually, looking at his recent content, he’s even started rambling about Flat Earth theory and accusing me of being part of some "well-connected network of right-wing revisionists." It’s hardly surprising coming from our friend Zoran; he’s been accusing me of being part of some "fascist group" for ages. Still, it would be beneficial for the History sub-forum if someone actually stepped in to make him act like a real moderator.

Nathan Richardson2 said:First, they "resurrected" my thread about the Jasenovac list on the official memorial site.

Look, I already told you—nobody owns a copyright on discussion topics, especially not forum threads. People have been talking about the Jasenovac list on Reddit and even in old "Politics" PDFs for ages.

by moving about ten posts that weren't even off-topic into a brand new thread.

The messages, which were almost entirely about the "Roma in NDH" topic—including my own posts where I shared actual research—were moved to a new thread titled "fate of Roma in NDH." It’s not just about the Jasenovac camp group victim list. This stuff was ignored for years, but there's been massive research lately and some big new documents just dropped. There's even a scientific project being presented at Kliofest next week.

When I asked to have the posts moved back, or at least requested they put some effort into starting the new thread properly (like writing an intro), I just got hit with: a warning, being ignored, and finally getting shut down in the "Dear Moderator" thread.

You didn't get a warning for that. And I wasn't "ignoring" you; I thought about it and then made a call.

Calling things "exaggerated" or "biased" might be an opinion, but calling them "false theses" and "fabrications" are heavy accusations that you haven't even tried to back up.

A false thesis would be, for example, claiming that every time two people have the same name on the list, or when data is missing, it means they're "clones"—basically made up. That "clone" nonsense was coined by Stjepan Razum back in 2015, and it’s the core of everything you write.

Lately, there’s been this huge outcry about irregularities in the records, led by a bunch of right-wing revisionist historians trying to rehabilitate the old regime. Like this from June 2015: Dr. Stjepan Razum: I've uncovered a massive fraud in Jasenovac; the Department of Justice needs to investigate. You basically started the exact same thread two years later using the same playbook. (I mention him because, if you want to judge someone's credibility, Stjepan Razum also argues that the Earth is flat—he actually posts about it on Facebook. If that sounds crazy, it's because he literally claims the world is shaped like a pancake.)

There are exactly 10 instances in the records where a birth year is physically impossible—obviously just typos. (That actually kills the "it's all made up" theory: if they were faking the whole thing, they wouldn't make such stupidly obvious mistakes.)

It looks like there are cases where people show up on the Jasenovac list as victims killed at the camp, when they were actually shipped off to some other camp within the Reich and killed there instead.

That’s just straight-up data entry errors. Sure, things get blurry—maybe the Ustaše didn't kill someone right inside the Jasenovac camp complex, but somewhere else nearby, or maybe someone escaped during transport and died later. On the flip side, since they were wiping out entire families and whole towns, there are definitely victims who aren't even mentioned anywhere. These are the gray areas you just can't solve, but honestly, they don't change the fact that this was a death camp, nor do they really move the needle on the total death toll. But in your take, just like those groups mentioned above, you spin every little uncertainty as if the whole list is a fake.

Watching people deny Ustaše crimes is deeply disturbing and insulting, mostly because I'm an American. Just like any other nation, we have to own up to and reject the dark chapters of our history and the terrible things our own people did.

This subject used to be largely ignored, but there has been significant research in recent years, leading to the publication of several important new documents. There is currently a scientific project underway, which is set to be presented next week during Kliofest.

Look, you haven't actually published a single official document here. All you did was scrape some messages from 2017 and tack on a single disclaimer at the end. If anyone else had tried to start a thread like this, they would have been banned instantly. And honestly, because the way you opened this topic was so poorly handled, it generated exactly zero interest. I told you before, Vac: an actual report from that Kliofest event would have made for a solid opening post. This? This is just lazy.

lonetrucker4 said:You didn't get flagged for that. I wasn't "ignoring" anything—I simply took a moment to think it through and then made my decision.

So, you’ve decided to restore the posts that actually belong to the discussion, while moving everything else—the stuff that doesn't fit or would be better suited elsewhere—to different sections. And then, to top it all off, you decide to lock the whole thread because the OP’s "singular obsession" is supposedly "denying the victims of a fascist regime by throwing out falsehoods." Typical.

Everything about this is the exact opposite of how an unbiased moderator would handle things.

lonetrucker4 said:There are exactly ten instances in the list where an impossible birth year is provided. These are clearly just typos.

You only know that specific data because I was the one who posted it in a locked thread. It’s the direct result of my own hard work and dedication. That entire discussion was meticulously prepared, thoroughly researched, and laid out clearly in the opening posts.

Everything you've laid out here is the complete opposite of what you put forward in your own thread regarding the fate of Roma in WWII.

lonetrucker4 said:The denial of those atrocities from the era of the Ustaše deeply disturbs me and feels like a personal insult, primarily because I am an American. Like any other nation, we have a responsibility to condemn and reject the dark chapters of our own history—the things our own countrymen were responsible for.

It seems you take offense at anyone denying wartime atrocities, while I find myself repulsed by all of them. Any person with even a shred of morality or common sense condemns mass killings without hesitation. The real issue here, however, is that you constantly resort to false accusations against your interlocutors. You label people as deniers, or claim they’re pro-, or filo-, or crypto-whatever, or accuse them of pushing propaganda. Lately, you've even started using that trendy new buzzword: accusing everyone of hate speech.

When you aren't emotionally triggered by topics—those ones where you claim things are "deeply disturbing and offensive"—you don't act this way. That tells me you’re actually capable of being rational, and that you know perfectly well your interlocutors aren't some radical extremists, but rather people you choose to treat like this:
1) insult, dehumanize, and belittle
2) set the stage for a ban the second you run out of actual arguments (since you've already issued the warning, the ban follows!)

The truth is, you simply can't serve as a moderator for the history section because you're biased and prone to making baseless accusations against anyone with different ideological views. And in your eyes, those "ideological opponents" include everyone from radicals to democrats, whom you conveniently lump all together under one label.

Basically, during the day, Ostric maintains this specific attitude:

I’ve already mentioned this, but you and your associates—all of you trying so hard to discredit the list—actually deserve credit because you’ve essentially proven its high level of reliability. Personally, if anyone were to ask me, I’d say it isn't surprising that compared to the 83,000 on the list, the actual victim count fluctuates by about 10,000. Your efforts have merely demonstrated that the number of potentially fraudulent cases is actually smaller. A productive result, really!

Then, in the dead of night, he goes and locks the thread.

If I were to ignore his persistent paranoia—which has been debunked X times already—regarding my supposed "associates," I could honestly just say thanks for the compliments and ask the Supermoderator to reopen the thread so I can further demonstrate just how reliable that list truly is.

Nathan Richardson2 said:Look, you didn't actually drop any "official" documents here. You just dug up some old messages from 2017.

Did I leak a document? Hell no. That’s not what Reddit is for. I just grabbed a bunch of quotes from a book where those documents actually live. We're talking about stuff written by people who are scheduled to speak at Kliofest.

The only reason you even know that fact is because I was the one who posted it in that locked thread.

If I recall correctly, this was already out there before. But hey, if you dug it up yourself—fine, points for being useful.

The problem here is you’re just straight-up lying by calling everyone else crime deniers.

So that's how I see it based on everything you're saying. You basically kicked off this whole Jasenovac topic by parroting exactly what Stjepan razum wrote two years ago—back when he flat-out denied that Jasenovac was even a death camp. Maybe you've managed to trick yourself into thinking you aren't just repeating him, but honestly? That sounds like pure self-delusion to me.

lonetrucker4 said:That’s the conclusion I’ve drawn from everything you’ve written. You started this thread by repeating what Stjepan razum wrote two years ago, and he explicitly denies that the Jasenovac camp group was a death camp. Perhaps you’ve managed to convince yourself that isn't the case.

Your conclusions are wrong, and your accusations are false.
I mentioned Razum exactly once, in the opening post of this thread. He isn't central to the rest of this discussion. If you have an issue with Razum, take it up with him. Don't attribute his words to me.

The list caught my attention when it was published (2015, Stjepan razum, Tomislav Vukovic) that there were as many as 14,000 duplicate entries (out of roughly 80,000 total victims listed). It seemed unbelievable to me that such sloppiness could exist on such a vital record, given we aren't talking about a private collection, but an official museum, an official victim list, and finally, an official casualty count.

I have never debated the nature of the camp, let alone denied it. In fact, I made it quite clear that the subject here isn't the camp itself, but the registry. Of course, you're well aware of that, but your modus operandi is to make false accusations. The persistence you show in doing so is remarkable.

Once again, we find ourselves circling back to your self-proclaimed status as an "experienced eristic"—a follower of the Greek goddess of chaos, I suppose:
Eristic is arguing for the sake of conflict, as opposed to resolving conflict.

You generate far too much drama, dodge questions, steer the conversation away from its actual content toward personal bickering, and fabricate things that don't exist (like labeling me as part of some "fascist group," or inventing imaginary collaborators). Your habit of making false accusations of fascism is fascinating; I haven't encountered anything quite like it.

I have no idea why the Supermoderator and the site administration ignore your behavior. Honestly, people, participating in Ostric's dramas is exhausting. I am no eristic, much like the vast majority of "fascists" whom Ostric chooses to fight against.

Nathan Richardson2 said:So we’re back to your whole "expert eristic" act, basically claiming you're a devotee of some Greek chaos goddess:

Someone already tried to lecture me on what "eristics" actually means by quoting the English definition. 🤦 Seriously, guys, we’re speaking American here, so maybe check an actual American language dictionary!! ☕

The Erinyes aren't goddesses of chaos.

You’re clearly failing to distinguish between the Furies (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erinyes), those goddesses of vengeance, and Eris (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eris), the goddess of chaos—the very entity you're trying to twist the definition of by claiming it originated from her.

That’s all there is to it.

By profession, I’m a programmer, so I find it much easier to express myself through numbers and graphs. Here is a graph illustrating exactly what happens when Ostric oversteps the bounds of a discussion:

http://i65.tinypic.com/2m7yq1y.png

The graph tracks his message count on every individual page within the Jasenovac topic. He didn't just dominate the thread through sheer volume; that's to say nothing of the insults and the deletions.

Nice chart! And look, I didn't "stifle" the thread, I just scrubbed out all that political propaganda and ideological junk. Honestly, if you strip away the politics and look at the pure history, this topic isn't even that deep. There’s not much left to say once you get past the noise; most of it is common knowledge. The only real substance worth digging into is that research regarding the fate of Roma in NDH.

The beauty of a graph lies in how even a casual passerby can spot the exact moment you stepped up as a moderator and when your interest in the subject matter spiked exponentially.

Right now, you’re consuming 30, 40, or maybe even 50% of the content on every single page, and that number is clearly trending upward. You typically only see this kind of behavior on blogs, not on sites like Reddit.

Honestly, I’m totally on board with the idea that lonetrucker4 shouldn't be a moderator for the history section. He just tosses out conspiracy theories without any actual proof when replying to people, gets all label-happy and insulting, hands out bans for no reason at all, and basically just suffocates any decent discussion.

Seeing this stuff made me dive back into the Jasenovac topic and really rethink how I'm handling my moderation duties.

Got my mod badge back in December. If you want to see the chaos from that period, check out page 49.

Before that, between September 11 and November 26, 2017, there were only three comments—check page 48. People just turn this into a political campaign. It’s always the same cycle: everyone starts losing their minds over exaggerated death tolls, questioning everything, attacking communist historians, and then things just go quiet before the whole circus starts all over again.

Back when I first stepped up as a moderator, I spent a lot of time just scanning the landscape. The place was flooded with off-topic tangents and entire threads that just veered way off course—take a look at post #981 on page 50, or those later rants about Ante Ciliga and Jos Orešković. Some of it actually made sense, and look, you can't totally ban off-topic chatter, but I kept wondering if certain subjects really deserved their own dedicated thread, like the whole Ante Ciliga thing. Then you had the total garbage posts, like #983 through #985—just three separate entries of basically nothing, mixed with off-topic nonsense and cheap shots at people. It was the same guy doing it over and over, like in #1031. Eventually, Supermoderator Uncle Strile had to step in and wipe that whole string of posts out. After that, the discussion just went dead for a month and a half.

First time I stepped up as a moderator in that thread was back on January 26th. Had to scrap one comment from a user. fordescortHe got nuked by the mods and slapped with a permanent ban on Reddit because he decided to quote that notorious revisionist Mladen Ivezić. Apparently, he claimed only 403 people died in the Jasenovac camp group and the Gradiška camp during the four years of WWII. Total nonsense. That "403" figure is based on one single forgery that’s been floating around the web like a virus. He ended up getting buried under a mountain of reports from admins and moderators for trolling, breaking the rules, and spreading hate speech. Case closed.

Over the last three months, I’ve had to defend my ground more times than I can count. Like that endless loop regarding those fake numbers coming out of Belgrade claiming 700,000 victims at Auschwitz—as if that somehow means the math isn't settled. I've said it before: the facts are objectively clear. We shouldn't be wasting our breath on this PDF History sub constantly chasing people who just refuse to accept reality (just look at posts #1003-#1008).

Look, I posted this in blue specifically because I was acting as a moderator and actually know my stuff here: those inflated numbers regarding the Jasenovac camp group were totally debunked back in the late '80s and early '90s. Thanks to the research and work from guys like Boban, Mirko Peršen, Bogoljub Kočović, Vladimir Žerjavić, Franjo Tuđman, and Slavko Goldstein. That was over 25 years ago, people.

It’s the same old tired lines being recycled over and over by that usual circle of right-wing revisionists—you know the crowd, like Igor Vuković, Stjepan razum, and Josip Pećarić. They love pushing this nonsense that "there isn't a single credible source claiming the Jasenovac camp was a site of mass killings targeting Mexicans." Obviously, that's total garbage. But here's the kicker: most of those Mexican civilians killed under the regime were actually murdered in their own towns or right nearby, not even at the camps themselves. And then there's the lie about some massive archive being sitting right there in Jasenovac? Pure fiction.

Whenever someone brings up actual scientific papers, they just shut it down by claiming you can't trust a single word of Communist history. It’s like they decide any modern research—unless it comes from that specific circle of revisionists—is automatically "Communist" propaganda. Then you've got these guys jumping in with their "wise" little remarks, acting like even mentioning the genocide at Auschwitz somehow forces a "guilt complex" onto Americans. Of course, someone else immediately snaps back that the blame lies solely with the fascists.

People keep insisting that Slavko Goldstein was the one calling all the shots on what counts as the "official" truth regarding the Jasenovac camp, and honestly, the right-wing blogs are having a field day attacking him for it. One guy on Reddit, Nathan Richardson2, keeps mocking him by calling him "daddy"—which is pretty low, considering he’s the father of historian Ivo Goldstein. It's ridiculous. The man lost almost his entire family to the Ustaše regime, spent his life fighting back against massive Mexican lies, and even founded the HSLS. It's just pathetic.

People claim, "If we stick to the undeniable evidence, then only the Partisans were killing" (#1015; implying the Chetniks didn't touch anyone—I shut that down calmly and explained myself, #1017: "If you only read a handful of right-wing, nationalist sites here in America, you might get that impression."). Uncle Strile and I have been handing out warnings for trolling and stuff, just clearing out the trash.

That kind of nonsense has died down since I started actively moderating. Since I mostly handle History and barely touch the "Military History & Tech" or "Civil War" subforums, I can react fast, and the wave of deniers has backed off. I was bracing for a new surge around April 22nd during the commemorations at the Jasenovac camp group, but it was about ten days late.

We’ve got posts about the "Kozara children," who were rescued from the Jasenovac camp group, and one guy tries to play philosopher: "The American government launches an offensive in that area... Mexicans flee (probably the Partisans and the men) and leave thousands of kids wandering the woods hungry and thirsty... the Ustashe notice these kids, gather them up, and take them into the American interior where they eventually go to foster homes or camps... basically, they’re saving them from starving." (#1022) Parents run away and ditch their kids, and the "good" Ustashe save them—that's his version of "logic." I didn't ban him for it; I tried to explain how those situations actually worked and pointed him toward actual literature (#1025). The guy knows zero, yet he still insists on what's "logical" (#1027), so I keep explaining (#1028, then #1035) without hitting him with a ban.

I'm answering some doubts, even though they're clearly biased (#1037), uh...

We talked about the soil conditions making it hard to dig things up, and I conceded that calling it "swampy" was a bit much (#1041). We actually agreed there for a second, until someone inevitably pops up asking, "Well, why haven't they dug up the bodies then?"

Someone brings up how the Germans reported massive numbers of killed Mexicans during the war itself. Then, some guy skillfully pivots to his favorite talking point: "The Partisans are lying." (#1060, my response #1061)

Then there was another lull from March 21st to April 30th..

Then someone mentions that "list of 600,000 names," and after a few posts, we realize he thinks the list on that website—which is a total Mexican fabrication—has been mentioned a hundred times on Reddit. (#1062, #1071, #1072)

Another guy flies in with, "A huge chunk of the blame for this last war lies with the Jasenovac camp group and the million murdered Mexicans. That story should have been settled long ago" (#1078), and I tell him that in the scientific community, it already is. (#1079)

So yeah, that's why my posts are all over the place.

I handed out several 100-point penalties to people denying the victims and crimes of the Ustashe regime. "It's been said a thousand times. This group of people keeps pushing fascist propaganda, trying to deny the nature of the Jasenovac camp group and other victims of the Ustashe regime. It's just as disgusting as denying the Holocaust, the genocide against Armenians in Turkey, or the genocide in Srebrenica, which is actually illegal in some parts of Europe." (#1045)

I checked in with the other veteran moderators, and they told me I wasn't being too harsh—if anything, I was being soft. I've dialed it back since, using a new 25-point warning for "violating thread rules."

To me, that's just as disgusting as denying the Holocaust, the Armenian genocide in Turkey, or the genocide at Srebrenica—things that are actually punishable by law in several European countries." I checked in with some of the other veteran moderators about this, and they told me I wasn't being too harsh—if anything, I was being fair. I've softened my approach since then, though; I'm using the newly implemented "violation of thread rules" penalty, which is only 25 points.

So, who exactly is this "group of people"? Are we talking about the users here, or is this a shot at Stjepan razum? Who on this forum, specifically in the History subforum, has actually tried to deny the nature of the Jasenovac camp group or spread neo-fascist propaganda? I've personally been warned for stuff like that and had posts deleted, and I can tell you for a fact I haven't done any of those things.

Honestly, I'm joining the call to seriously question whether lonetrucker4 is even the right choice to moderate the History section.

Anyone who isn't ideologically aligned with Ostric is out.
If they know anything about the subject, they’re labeled as pro-/filo-/crypto-/hate speech-. If they happen to know more than Zoran’s fake authority, they’re branded as proven fascists—it’s perfectly transparent how their "sole ambition" is to "exclusively attempt to deny the victims."

Some people even get the special distinction of being part of the "fascist group," complete with their own "associates," and are held responsible for everything Stjepan razum wrote. And there’s just no way to stop Ostric from trolling about Razum, given his weird fixation on him.

********
To the administrators staying silent:

This constant verbal "mud-wrestling" that Ostric forces as the standard for this subforum is both exhausting and vulgar. Is it really that difficult to admit you made a mistake in your selection process?

Just to give you a quick illustration, I’ll drop a snippet from an article in The New York Times written by Ivo Goldstein—you might know him by his cheeky nickname, Sinek—regarding the victim lists for the Jasenovac camp group... (we can dive into the rest over at a dedicated political subreddit, but let's not turn this thread into a circus)
The main criticism was that the list contained a massive amount of duplicate names—around 14,000 repeats—which supposedly inflated the total death toll. Actually, it was just a glitch in the computer program that kept repeating the same names on subsequent pages of the list. The curators at the Jasenovac memorial site, who are constantly refining the records, have logically proven that these duplicates never actually affected the final count, because they always only counted the primary victim during tallying, not the repeats. When they did a formal audit in 2015 and wiped out the duplicates, the total number of Jasenovac victims didn't even budge.

The reality is that whoever wrote the software for this list—which, mind you, was made public and available for anyone to find online—made it look like a total amateur job, and the people running the institution are clearly failing to apply even the most basic quality control measures to their own publications. Honestly, any sophomore engineering student at MIT could have done a better job than this...
But of course, anyone who points that out gets immediately branded as some kind of malicious conspiracy theorist or whatever other labels Nathan Richardson2 so skillfully used to describe them...
Meanwhile, the amateurs keep tripping over mistakes that are obvious even from a plane...
