Basically, this is a pretty tricky question...
On Polly, it’s obvious that whoever starts on pole position is having a good day, and that isn't always the person who was actually fastest in qualifying...
As for the championship, you're guessing race results, so you could argue it really kicks off at the start of the race—meaning after any qualifying penalties are handed out.
But then again, you have to submit your predictions before qualifying even happens. So, you could also say it starts with qualifying itself, making it pointless to factor in post-qualifying penalties when looking at the pole position winner...
The tournament is a totally different story since you're predicting qualifying results. It makes perfect sense to ignore any penalties issued after qualifying, just like you don't look at penalties after the race is over...
If my memory serves me right, we had this exact debate ages ago and even ran a poll to decide how to handle it...
I can't quite remember what the final call was, but if I recall correctly, it was about Schumacher's pole (Monaco 2012 🤔) being stripped away due to a penalty...
It wouldn't hurt to dig up the archives and see what was actually decided. 🤔
