There are a million tutorials on YouTube about how to remove hair from a subject using select/refine edges—but there is a catch. Every single one of those videos features a perfectly solid, uniform background. It’s easy when you're working against a studio backdrop! I am currently struggling with a photo where the background is incredibly busy and uneven, and my attempts at separating the hair from the scenery have been a total disaster. I would truly appreciate it if anyone could share some advice or a better workflow for tackling this kind of complexity.

Honestly, just copy the photo layer, slap a mask on it, make a custom brush, and mask out the background. Since the hair looks a bit fuzzy in this shot, you can get away with some "artistic license" 🙂. Just tuck the background layer between those two photo layers and you're golden. Look, if you’re obsessed with keeping every single stray hair perfectly in place, fine—mask it manually. But for me? This is the easiest way. There are other ways to do it, but I’d have to film a whole tutorial to explain them all, and frankly, I'm getting too old for messing around in Adobe Photoshop.

Thanks so much for the guidance—I'm definitely going to dive in and give it a shot using those steps
