Round-trip bus ticket, Cleveland - Chicago

I’ve never actually bought a round-trip ticket—or any kind of return fare, really—so I’m a bit lost here. How does the process work when I’m looking at a round trip from Cleveland to Chicago and back again?
If I go ahead and buy one, does that ticket basically cover any bus leaving Cleveland for Chicago on that specific day, and then any ride back from Chicago to Cleveland later on? Or am I missing something? Can someone please walk me through how this all works??

A round-trip ticket isn't just valid for a single day; if I recall correctly, it's good for about 30 days... 🤔... which means you don't necessarily have to head back the very same day you left.
I'm assuming you just have to stick with the same carrier, though.
That should be pretty much it.
