Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny

After fifteen years of waiting and a hell of a lot of development hell, the sequel is finally dropping on Netflix. 🙂

The cast is a little different this time around, and instead of Ang Lee at the helm, we’ve got Yuen Woo-ping directing. He’s the legend behind the classic Drunken Master with Jackie Chan, and he also worked on Kill Bill Vol. 2.

Initial thoughts? I’m not exactly setting my expectations through the roof, but it looks like a fun ride. 😁

I don't know—the first one was just great, mostly because the characters actually felt real, you know? They had their own specific drives and goals, making mistakes they didn't realize until it was too late, and so on... This one feels a bit more like shallow storytelling.🤷 But hey, I guess a trailer isn't a guarantee for anything; it could turn out to be good, maybe.

If nothing else, it’s a pretty decent photo. Honestly, though, I don’t see anything provocative here—just a blatant attempt to squeeze profit out of a legacy that's already seen better days.

Honestly, I think The House of Flying Daggers would have been a hundred times better than this.

Also—it would be nice, just for a change—if not everyone had to die at the end. I guess I prefer a happy ending; it’s as if people don't have enough real-world problems without movies trying to depress them too.

I agree. Between Hero and House of Flying Daggers, House is definitely the winner for me.

It actually turned out much better than I anticipated. In my opinion, you shouldn't view it as a direct sequel to the original; instead, treat it as its own standalone story that barely feels connected to the first one. Since the cast speaks English, it doesn't really carry that traditional East Asian atmosphere. I also read that they filmed it in New Zealand, so you don't see any typical Asian landscapes either. The plot is quite straightforward, featuring plenty of action sequences, martial arts, and flight scenes, all wrapped up with a happy ending. It’s perfectly fine for some light entertainment, though it doesn't leave a particularly deep emotional impact.
