Then she wakes up and realizes it was all just a dream—she crawls back to the hole and finds some old guy waiting there who clearly knew about the creatures in the holes and was actually feeding them.

It’s an alternate ending. There's a UK version and a US version.

In this second one, you'd probably like it better.
Try looking for it on YouTube.

There is. For some reason, I can't paste it. In one, she stays and sees her daughter's cake. A Mocan ending. I prefer that one. In the other, she sees light and escapes.
The first one hits harder.

Anyway, great movie.
Feeling like watching it now. Haven't in a while.

Ethan Palmer61 said:That’s just how it works with Haneke; he simply refuses to grant you the luxury of a happy ending...

How can you say that isn't the case? Take that one movie where some guy brings a girl home under the pretense of studying together, only to brutally murder her... and then the old folks just swoop in, grab everything he’s built for themselves, and everyone lives happily ever after...?

Jack Murphy5 said:Force Majeure (2014)

It’s an incredibly solid film for the most part, though I have to say, those final few minutes are just utterly nonsensical...

I find myself wondering... how exactly would you go about reaching a climax in such a scenario...
He opted for that surrealist, Buñuel-esque path, which isn't exactly the most joyful way to live, though I suppose it’s certainly not the most foolish either...

northernpilot2 said:Honestly, my memory is getting a little fuzzy since it’s been such a long time since I last sat down to watch it! From what I recall, she crawls through all those bones, manages to scramble into the car, and starts driving away. But then, there's this twist where she wakes up and realizes it was all just a dream—she actually crawled back into that hole, only to be met by some old man who clearly knew everything about those creatures living in the tunnels and was actually out there feeding them!

Actually, that sounds like the second movie. 🙂

As for the original film, there are actually two different versions floating around! There’s the "happy ending" specifically tailored for the American market, where she makes it out of the cave, reaches the car, and escapes safely. Then you have the version intended for the rest of the world, which is much closer to the director's true vision. In that one, she has this hauntingly beautiful vision of her daughter and a birthday cake, but as the camera pulls back, we realize she’s still trapped inside the cave, completely surrounded by those creatures with absolutely no hope of escape.

Oh, really? 😁 Then I guess I totally mixed things up. But yeah, I was actually talking about that whole bit with the cake and the daydreaming stuff—honestly, I'm just not feeling it.

He opted for a Buñuel-style ending—not exactly the happiest outcome, but certainly not without merit.

As for me, I honestly couldn't tell you. 😛

I just know that the way it wrapped up didn't sit right with me at all.

I know that the ending didn't sit right with me at all.

It wasn't for me either, mostly because the director decides to pivot from an intensely realistic structure into something entirely different—that bus scene—in the literal final minutes of the film.

If I were in his shoes, I probably would have focused on their journey back home: the winter vacation concludes, we carry away certain experiences, and perhaps things in our marriage won't ever be quite the same... but that would require an extra ten or twelve minutes, and the film is already far too long.

Is it possible that the entire bus sequence was staged just to set up one of those final shots, where the mother tiredly hands her child over to a friend instead of her husband? A sign that some things simply aren't forgotten, and that nothing will ever return to the way it was...
If that's the intention (and it very well could be), then I find that ending perfectly acceptable.

I was just sitting here thinking about Vanilla Sky (2001)...

I honestly adore that movie, but I always find myself caught in this internal tug-of-war regarding how it should have actually ended. Imagine if it had finished with a totally shell-shocked Tom Cruise screaming at the top of his lungs because he wants to wake up and desperately needs some technical support! Instead, the director basically takes us by the hand and serves every single answer up on a silver platter. Personally, I feel like we would have been cheated out of one of the most breathtaking endings ever captured on film, especially since everything is wrapped up so beautifully with that sweet, honey-like "Untitled 4" by Sigur Ros. 🙂

Maybe if Terminator 2 had gone a different route—if instead of that thumbs-up, Arnie had just flipped the bird and muttered "I'll be back"—who knows, maybe he actually would have made a comeback...

Oh wait... 🙄

Dammit. It’s actually perfect because I refuse to acknowledge any new Terminator movies released after Terminator 2...

That isn't actually how the movie ends; the real conclusion is that monologue by Sarah Connor, which they cut out quite heavily from the theatrical release. You really need to watch the extended cut, the Skynet edition, because that’s where you get the full sequence uninterrupted... In that version, the apocalyptic future never actually happens and everyone just lives happily ever after. Based on that, you could reasonably conclude that there was no intention of making T3 back then...

Doctor Zhivago

I really wish Jevgraf had actually managed to help Lara find her daughter. 😢

I have no clue why that specific tragedy hit me so hard, especially in a movie that’s basically one heartbreak after another, but there you go. 🕺

Regarding Terminator 2... it's not that there aren't inconsistencies. They could have been avoided, perhaps like this: the T-1000 isn't stupid enough to be unaware that the T-800 has an alternative power source—he probably would have waited just a few seconds for the T-800 to activate it and then "shut him down" again. He should have killed Sarah the moment he found her; it doesn't make sense for him to ask her to call John when he can easily mimic both her appearance and her voice. In that exact moment, John might have appeared out of nowhere and knocked him into the pool, which would serve as the first sign that he'll become some kind of leader and makes the right decisions under pressure. John would then remember to destroy the old arm from his backpack, along with the one just pulled off a few minutes prior. Arnold, however, wouldn't be able to move him because he weighs about a ton, and by then the police would arrive, forcing him to flee... and that way, they ensure continuity (and potential sequels) since someone will inevitably want to capture a Terminator for research.

Otherwise, the way it stands now... the happy ending feels forced, which requires everyone to suddenly become less intelligent just to make it work.

Honestly, I think that ending would have worked better... Or maybe just having Tom Cruise catch Jerry.

You've gotta check out the extended version, the Skynet edition—it's all there in one go. Basically, that dark future never happened and everyone lived happily ever after. From what I can tell, it looks like they weren't even planning on making T3 back then.

Honestly, the Skynet edition ending is one of the worst things I've ever watched.

If they don't, then what we have now... it feels like a forced happy ending, the kind where everyone has to suddenly become an idiot just to make the plot work.

The thing is, Cameron wasn't even planning on sequels in the first place. For him, the story ended with T2, and honestly, I'm inclined to agree—most of the other movies aren't worth mentioning, maybe Salvation at most.

The Mission to Mars... is that even the right title for that little flick? 🤔
Everything about it worked for me—well, almost everything—except for that ending. 😁
And then there’s Apocalypse Now... 🤣...it felt as if they just tossed in those Jedranjak ships in some desperate hope that someone might eventually step up to film a sequel. 🤦

Everything was great except for the ending. 😁
And Apocalypto...🤣...it's like they threw in some Jedranjak just hoping someone would film a sequel. 🤦

Having Jedranjak there really emphasizes that the stronger guy always wins.

I mean, they could have just thrown in the Starship Enterprise... you know, like that scene in in the dark. 🤣

I’ve got an idea for how to spice up those endless American soap operas. Imagine this: you have a mysterious sniper lurking in the shadows, waiting for the absolute final episode just to take out the young lovers we’ve been forced to watch for a thousand episodes while waiting for their wedding. Picture the scene—upbeat music, everyone smiling, pure bliss everywhere, and then suddenly, some jerk pulls the trigger and takes them both out? One shot, two bodies, and boom—cut to black.
