Windows 7 Wi-Fi driver issues

Greetings,

I have a freshly installed version of Windows 7 on my laptop, but I am having a difficult time getting online. Previously, this machine connected to the internet via Wi-Fi without any issues, but now it simply refuses to connect.

I went ahead and installed all the necessary drivers from HP's website... yet the internet remains inaccessible.

I am honestly at a loss as to where to begin. When I attempt to run the troubleshooter, it tells me: Plug an Ethernet cable into the network adapter "Local area connection"

...however, accessing an Ethernet cable isn't particularly easy for me, as the router is located far away and the connection is shared with several other people. I am unsure how to establish a Wi-Fi connection instead...

Which specific laptop are we talking about here? Do you have the HP model number handy? Honestly, it's pretty straightforward—just head over to HP's official support site and grab the drivers specifically for that model. Once you're there, look for the wireless LAN category. If the first one you try doesn't work, don't sweat it; sometimes these laptops come with different versions of Wi-Fi cards depending on the build. If the first driver fails, just uninstall it and give the next one a shot... it usually does the trick.

Does your laptop even have a physical Wi-Fi switch? Check that first.
Obviously, you need the exact, 100% correct driver for the laptop's Wi-Fi, don't you?

I have no idea what your last sentence was supposed to mean.

...or maybe the drivers are actually fine... you just need to know the SSID and the password to get online... check your taskbar for the Wi-Fi icon, click on your network, and just punch in the credentials if you have them handy.

The laptop finally started behaving itself once we plugged it into the router via Ethernet... it ran through some necessary updates, and everything began working properly. Prior to that, it was simply impossible to install any of the WiFi drivers from HP's website.
