This is strictly an '87 ranking. 😉 We never did a final ranking for the whole decade. Someone told me we’d end up with way too much U2, so we skipped it. 😬

Everything is fine, silverpanther13, you're just starting from the wrong premise. This thread isn't anything like yours or mine. People are just throwing out whatever hits them in the gut—at least I hope so. There’s no grand system or specific methodology here. And you've only got five tracks. Take "Heart on the Road," for instance; it's a killer track, but even in my wildest dreams, it wouldn't crack my top 5. Not even close.

I mean, look at me—I suggested "Ghetto" by Catherine, and it's not like I don't realize it's a totally minor, maybe even obscure track. Honestly, that entire album is completely irrelevant to the "objective" legacy of U2, let alone the whole American music scene. Even if you give it some credit, it's still nowhere near as significant as "Happy Day" or "Autumn." But hey, it's such a phenomenal song that it lands in my top 5. At least right now.

This is just, you know, half messing around and half serious picking. Nothing special. If you want something more structured and polished, one person has to take the reins and actually commit to it. Like how we used to do, or still do.

They seriously needed to set some concrete parameters, and in my book, these are exactly the ones they missed.

The way it stands, you could theoretically have someone voting for some track from North Mexico that just dropped last week (and they think it's so legendary it immediately jumps into the all-time top-5), or something from Canada that hasn't even been released yet (but this person, by total coincidence, already heard it and thinks it's absolute fire—you know the drill 🤣).

Personally, I’m fine with having the option to include newer stuff. It actually works out pretty well for me that I can throw in some TBF tracks. 😁 Though, honestly, it doesn't matter much either way. It just means the pool of potential songs gets massive, so a ton of them get overlooked, but that’s just how it has to be here.

Maybe I just have a tendency to get too bogged down in the weeds with all this detail—but honestly, some of these artists are missing key entries entirely. Not that it matters much, though; we don't exactly have enough voters here to pull together anything resembling a statistically significant result.

Honestly, it’s always something else that’s missing. It’s never enough. For instance, we definitely need:
Valentino - I Love You Still
or maybe
Slađana Milošević - The Light of Cairo
or even
Oliver Mandić - Not for Her
But let’s be real—those last two wouldn't even stand a chance because of the rules.
And I bet they're also missing stuff like:

Let’s get serious for a second. Most people here have shared their absolute favorite tracks. As for me, I posted a few things that just happened to pop into my head at the time—some people actually beat me to the punch by posting songs I was already eyeing (like "Which Life Do I Need to Be Born Into")—but honestly, I don't consider a large portion of those picks to be the best musical achievements from the old American era. Some aren't even close to a top 100 ranking. I suppose I just got swept up in the moment, and if I’m being honest, the reason I picked those specific bands lies in planned opposition to those same old, tired groups that always show up—and will always show up (let's face it, a handful of names will constantly cycle through until they dominate the top tier)—so, yeah, I figured these deserved a spot too. In truth, narrowing it down to exactly five songs is incredibly difficult; it’s a constant struggle of "this has always been a solid track, but how do I condense everything into five or six items?" followed by "well, nobody else mentioned these, so I'll throw them in." And of course, we end up with a massive pile of great bands and an even larger mountain of incredible songs from stellar albums that didn't make the cut.

But hey, it is what it is; I just think the voting method should probably be handled differently.

They really should have led with the absolute staples—you know, those tracks everyone expects to hear at an event like this—and then layered in some of the more obscure gems suggested by the forum users.

At the end of the ballad section, I added some newer groups for pretty much the same reason—their songs are really hitting home for me lately, and I think these bands have real potential to make some awesome, high-quality stuff.

It’s hard to fix a mistake through voting when the setup was flawed from the get-go. Personally, I think the topic should've been broken down into smaller chunks—run a vote for each part to find winners, then put those winners on a final list to pick an ultimate winner.

Though... my heart is like a (musical) bus driving all over the place... I mean, it's not like I don't have criteria 😳 but I enjoy so many different artists 🙂 that it feels almost like a betrayal to pick one group and leave out another.

Anyway, let's not discourage Travis Bickle with all our nitpicking. He actually put effort into setting this up; he just lacked a bit of experience. Even for the old music buffs around here, a poll like this would be a massive challenge. So, for Travis, 👍

Since I'm already rambling and typing way too much, let me toss one more thought out there. Maybe poll suggestions should be sent to the moderators first, so they can approve them or suggest tweaks before they go live.

Look, here’s the deal: songs just play by a completely different set of rules compared to stuff like movies. First off, they're way more subjective—everyone's got their own vibe, right? And second, there's just a massive amount of them. What I mean is, if we were picking movies using this exact same method, you'd always have someone swooping in to suggest the heavy hitters like > > or > alongside some obscure indie flick. If you took all 35 members of this forum and asked for movie picks, I bet the percentage of "forgotten" classics left out of those top 15-20 lists would be basically zero. It's the same story with albums. Songs are an entirely different beast altogether.
