Hey everyone, I’m rocking an old setup from about 4 or 5 years ago, running a Core i7 at 2.33 GHz with 4 GB of DDR3 RAM and an SSD. I don't really game, so I won't bother listing a GPU here.
The thing is, my PC still handles my daily tasks perfectly fine, but whenever I try to open a ton of browser tabs at once—specifically sites that rely heavily on Flash, maybe 10 to 15 pages deep—the whole system just chokes. It slows down so much that trying to navigate anything feels like wading through molasses. Since that's how I work most of the time, I end up with this constant impression that the machine is just sluggish...
So, here’s my question: if I upgrade to a modern build with a newer i7, 8 or 16 GB of RAM, and a fast SSD, am I actually going to see a massive speed boost when dealing with Flash? Or is Flash just fundamentally broken and incapable of actually utilizing high-end hardware properly? If anyone has dealt with this, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Unfortunately, I don't have access to a high-end rig right now to test it out myself and see the difference firsthand.

I guess you might actually need another 4GB of RAM to get by here.

Too many Flash pages and a slow PC? Nothing new here. You need a processor with more cores—whether they're physical or logical—and way more RAM. Running 64-bit Windows is a given at this point, otherwise, having extra RAM is basically pointless.

Regarding the graphics card, you're only partially right. Some browsers and certain versions of Flash utilize hardware acceleration for specific tasks, so the GPU does play a role. For her setup, she needs to look at maximizing the number of specialized units as well as total memory capacity and bandwidth.

Ultimately, a lot comes down to the software you're running—specifically your browser settings and plugins—plus the actual size and configuration of the Flash animations themselves. You can often tweak those to lower the CPU load.

Running that many Flash pages simultaneously is actually a tougher scenario than hardcore gaming. It takes a hell of a lot of technical know-how and effort to get everything tuned to run smoothly.

If you've got a passion for new tech and you're using it for work, then upgrading is always the better move. But if you aren't exactly thrilled about dropping a few thousand bucks, just throw some more RAM in there, like Ryan Hayes82 suggested, and start optimizing.

Your processor is just too weak... grab a used i5 or something better, you've already got plenty of RAM... upgrading should be easy enough for you...

I don't see any point in buying an i7 just for browsing the web.

Just tell me straight—would this actually help my workflow? If a new setup is noticeably faster, it might eventually pay for itself... I know Flash can be a total nightmare, but I did a little digging online and found some ways to tweak my browser settings so it actually behaves itself. I’m running 64-bit Windows now, too, so it really just comes down to one thing: would having a processor that's roughly 3X more powerful along with a decent bump in RAM actually make things feel significantly snappier?

Since I'm already running 64-bit Windows, I'm wondering if jumping to a processor that's roughly 3x faster along with more RAM would make a significant difference.

Try this instead: uninstall the current version of Flash and install something like 9.0.28 or 10, then switch over to Opera 12.16. You shouldn't have any issues with Flash that way.

What do you mean an i5? I've got a Core 2 Duo that’s more than enough for this.

The only thing is the RAM, or maybe an SSD if the motherboard has at least SATA II support.

EDIT: I forgot the graphics card plays a part here too. Maybe that's slowing things down if the integrated graphics are terrible—which they probably are (like some old Intel GMA 4500 or something).

You can find plenty of stuff online if you just look up issues between your browser and Flash. You'll see tons of people dealing with the exact same headaches, along with advice on how to fix them.

I'm not sure how you're measuring "processor power," but like I said before, having more cores—whether physical or virtual—helps because it lets each browser tab hog its own core. Also, 16GB of RAM or more is absolutely necessary if you want to keep multiple tabs active in fast memory instead of forcing the system to constantly swap them out to the disk drive every time you switch tasks.

Plus, if you enable hardware acceleration for Flash animations in your settings, it taps into the GPU. You really want a dedicated graphics card for that since they use high-speed video memory rather than relying on much slower system RAM.
