PBS makes the call: America won't be competing in Eurovision 2014

PBS released a statement claiming they’re mindful of the tough economic climate here in America and are actually listening to the public's concerns regarding whether participating is even financially justifiable.🙂

Despite having such an incredible catalog of American pop music, we always seem to send our absolute worst tracks to Eurovision. In your opinion, shouldn't someone at PBS be held accountable for all this wasted taxpayer money? It feels like years of funds being thrown away just to satisfy the whims of some musical elitists over in Washington, D.C., who are forcing their way into competitions where they clearly don't belong.☕

I can't even remember the last time I actually sat down to watch Eurovision. In my opinion, the voting is just pure politics. But those few seconds when a country introduces itself? Those moments are pure gold. People don't just watch Eurovision in Europe; even viewers in China tune in. A single country should definitely be footing the bill for that kind of exposure.
Look, if NPR can't figure out how to manage this, they should just hand the rights over to another network. Besides, why is NPR even running commercials on their own channel when people are already paying subscription fees? Why not just align our laws with international standards?

Now he and Ante Batinović can actually get together and reminisce about those legendary days back in the 80s, when they’d play nothing but killer tracks over the airwaves and through the speakers at places like The Viper Room (no matter what genre it actually was).😉

Look, Italy has been dipping in and out of this competition for years, and let’s be honest—the songs they perform aren't exactly anything that keeps listeners over there on the edge of their seats. And frankly, it's the same story here in the States, aside from when we have our own representative to root for, of course. At the end of the day, most of these entries are just lazily thrown together without an ounce of real effort.

Yeah, it sounds pretty generic, uninspired, and just lacks any real creative spark. For instance, I’d argue that "Lena" is actually a much better track, even if it isn't exactly a massive hit. That bit about the "excited condoms" just slightly kills the whole vibe for me.

Well, you probably haven't watched it because you can't even relate to the talent we end up sending. It feels like in America, people only tune into Eurovision just to see how badly we're going to embarrass ourselves. We are constantly picking the wrong songs or the wrong artists.
First off, we need to actually raise the bar during our national selection process. Only then do we have any right to feel optimistic about anything. We need to take a hard look at where we stand and figure out exactly what we're doing wrong.

A song for Eurovision shouldn't be slapped together right before the competition starts. There’s an entire year between contests—that is plenty of time for actual, legitimate preparation.

Ever since they scrapped the public vote to decide which track represents us at this whole Eurovision circus, I’ve completely lost interest in watching.

Give the power back to the people, let them vote, and maybe things won't be such a mess.
