It’s definitely the smartest move, provided he doesn't need any extra room and the price tag isn't too steep.

You’ve got the 160GB option which is cheaper by about $32, but if I were in your shoes, I’d bite the bullet and just grab the 500GB drive instead. Seriously, there isn't much of a price gap compared to $33, yet you end up with three times the storage capacity, and it would be a massive waste to pass that up...

Yeah, it's SATA. I'm still running an old ATA drive from like eight years ago.
I think I'll probably just go with the 500GB one after all.

Just got my new 1TB WD Caviar Blue in the mail, but I’m starting to think I scored a dud.
The thing keeps making this distinct spin-up noise—you know, that sound when you're skipping tracks in Winamp or shutting down the PC, kind of like an old CD drive ramping up—followed by a sharp click. Is it possible I actually bought a faulty drive? What's the move here—can I even file a warranty claim for this?

Basically, I keep hearing this spin-up sound—like when I’m skipping tracks in Winamp or shutting down the PC, kind of like how an old CD drive sounds when it starts spinning up—and then a click! Is it possible I bought a faulty drive? What should I do? Will they actually honor the warranty return?

Are you running Windows 7? Windows has those power-saving settings that put drives into "sleep mode" when they aren't being used. It kicks back in whenever you click something or start searching the drive. That feature used to drive me absolutely insane, so I just disabled it entirely. 😬

Well, I just turned that off—fingers crossed that's the fix! 🙂
thanks! 🙂
