Look, for a bunch of complicated reasons I'd rather not get into 😁, I need to legally acquire an original copy of Visual Studio 2010 Professional edition. It seems to have vanished from the face of the earthβ€”everywhere I look, it's just Visual Studio 2012, which isn't what I'm after (and by the way, that'll set me back $4.00 😲 )

Is it even possible to buy VS 2010 legally anymore? Ideally, I'd want a corporate invoice for tax purposes, but if that's a pipe dream, I'll figure something else out.

Visual Studio 2010 should still be out there, especially since VS 2012 didn't even drop until last October. Have you checked this link yet? http://www.microsoft.com/visualstudio/eng/downloads
You’d also expect to find it at places like Best Buy, Staples, or Micro Center... it has to be sitting on a shelf somewhere. If you hit a dead end, just give Microsoft US a call; they'll point you in the right direction.

Like he said, you’d just expense this to the company.

Microsoft's official line is that the retail version of Visual Studio 2010 isn't even being sold anymore. Even the big resellers have completely cleared out their stock.
So now what? πŸ™‚

Visual Studio 2012? It’s way better, much more optimized...

I can't get Visual Studio 2012 to install on Windows XP. It's a real headache because my clients are still stuck using XP, and I need to maintain a consistent development environment. As far as I can tell, Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4.0 is the absolute limit for what actually runs on Windows XP.

So what now? πŸ™‚

I don't have much experience buying software online (well, using actual US dollars and all)... generally speaking, if the link below isn't it, then it isn't. It looks like they're trying to sell it.🀷

Nice work πŸ™ πŸ‘

So, since everyone’s gathered here 😁 I have a question. In theory, you should be able to use Visual Studio 2012 on Windows 7 to build applications targeting .NET Framework 4.0, which ought to run on Windows XP just as if they were originally built in Visual Studio 2010. There are a lot of moving parts and variables involved here, so I'm wondering if anyone has actually tested this in the real world? I'm not talking about some basic "Hello World" test case, but something with actual edge cases and complexity. 😬

Me? I have absolutely no clue what you're askingβ€”but I'm chiming in because I just posted a reply in the thread "below," yet here you are saying "since you're all already here..." 😬

Hopefully, someone with actual expertise can help you out πŸ™‚

I don't know what you're getting at with that. Just a single word? Not much to work with there. Samuel Price58 says:

Since you're all here anyway... 😁 Quick question. Theoretically, I know you could use Visual Studio 2012 on Windows 7 to build apps targeting .NET Framework 4.0, which should then run on Windows XP just like they were built in Visual Studio 2010. There are a lot of "ifs" involved here, though. Has anyone actually tested this with more than just a basic Hello World? I'm talking about real-world apps that push the limits a bit. 😬

The apps you build in .NET aren't tied to the OS itself. What I’m getting at is that you just need to check which .NET versions Windows XP actually supports, then pick your framework accordingly. You can easily code in Visual Studio 2012β€”even an Ultimate versionβ€”and as long as you stick to a .NET version compatible with XP, your app will run just fine on it.

Tried it a thousand times already.
