Need advice: Jaw imaging/scans

Greetings, everyone.

So, I recently visited my dentist, and they took an X-ray of my jaw.

I was hoping perhaps some experts here might be able to offer some guidance—if I may be so bold.

The area marked with the red circle is what was extracted—it was a cyst, which seems fairly evident from the imaging itself.

Isn't the whole point of a cleaning to save the tooth rather than perform surgery on it?
