Dear Reddit community,
I’m honestly not even sure who I should be addressing this to—it’ll probably just end up sitting in an inbox without a response—but I felt the need to get this off my chest...
I am genuinely curious about the reasoning behind appointing such a rigid individual as the moderator for our beautiful us subforum.
I’m referring to LEGO...
I notice they are hanging around the site constantly, which I suppose is one reason they were picked; clearly, the person has plenty of free time and enough energy to spare... since they don't have any major life stressors keeping them busy just yet, you decided to hand them a "job"...
But seriously, could someone please explain to them that when we talk in the San Francisco thread, we’re just being ourselves? We speak the way we talk and act the way we always do. It’s a small, tight-knit group of maybe ten people who all know each other well. For most of us, that specific thread is like our local neighborhood corner booth where we all meet up to grab a coffee or a beer and just hang out...
LEGO simply doesn't seem to grasp that, and they keep deleting posts for no apparent reason...

Oh, and one more thing... since they hold administrative roles in three different places, you really ought to consider paying them something. It seems only fair so the person isn't just sitting around all day monitoring everything for free...

Could you share a specific link to the page where those controversial deleted posts are located?

There isn't one. He wiped them clean. Every single one of those posts was just a mess of insults and heavy OFF topic nonsense. Does the guy honestly think it’s because his name shows up in red like Genghis Khan? He constantly plays favorites and talks down to everyone else.

Thanks for taking the time to read our grievances.

wiredangler5,
I truly hope we can have a civilized conversation about this.
Before LEGO took over, we had such a wonderful group here, especially with Dow Chemical acting as the true heart and soul of Beautiful us... he was incredibly accommodating, even allowing things that LEGO wouldn't dream of permitting in his wildest nightmares...
You see, to make our discussions about sports in San Francisco a bit more lively (since there aren't many of us and we all know each other quite well), he used to let us use a few different nicknames. It allowed us to chat, comment, and joke around as if we were several different people, when in reality, it was just one person having fun with us,...
With the arrival of LEGO, I fear that spirit is going to vanish, because he tends to delete posts like a simple "good morning, sunshine, finally ☕"
He doesn't seem to grasp that for us, just logging on in the morning and saying a few words is enough... it’s just how we Americans do things... it’s our version of a virtual front porch, where you don't even need to say much; it's just about knowing we are all present and accounted for....
In San Francisco, we don't spend our time bickering or fighting; occasionally we might comment on a current event, like Trump and his latest antics,... and then we'll move on to chatting about two lovely ladies who visit a certain cafe once a week, which inevitably makes everyone else "jealous," if you catch my drift.... honestly, this forum feels like a classic American soap opera to us....
I am asking you, please, let us write the way we are accustomed to. If someone new shows up and asks for advice, we will be happy to help and guide them... but the idea of us (the locals) posting constant updates about what's happening in every single country on a specific day is just plain ridiculous)...
Please, try to understand our perspective and explain to LEGO (who I suspect is quite young and a bit rigid, though surely he'll mellow out as he gets older) that we aren't bothering anyone and there is absolutely no need to delete our posts...

Thank you from the bottom of my heart on behalf of all the forum members from San Francisco.

I mean, LEGO,...
I see him hanging out on the forum constantly, so okay, maybe that's one reason you chose him—the kid clearly has enough free time and energy, and he doesn't have any health issues yet, so you gave him a "job."..
But seriously, please explain to him that when we post on the San Francisco thread, we talk the way we talk and act in real life. We’re a small group, maybe ten of us, and we all know each other. Most of us only post in that specific thread, and it feels like our little corner where we meet up to grab a coffee or a beer...
LEGO doesn't get it; he just deletes posts for no reason...

briskfox65 said:Nah, he deleted them. And apparently, all those posts were "full of insults and heavy Offtopic." The guy basically thinks that because his username is highlighted in red, he’s some kind of dictator. He just keeps favoring himself and being patronizing to everyone else.

Thanks for taking the time to read our complaints.

Angelina, there wasn't really a need for those unnecessary jabs at the moderator. 🙂

First off, his red username has nothing to do with how he moderates this subforum, and comparing his actions to "dictatorship" just because of the color isn't necessary.
LEGO is a moderator for Beautiful Us, and I am currently the super-moderator in charge of this specific section. So if anyone wants to complain about "dictatorial behavior caused by a red username," you can take it up with me.

What LEGO did wasn't an act of tyranny; it was setting the direction for how this subforum will be moderated. What the moderator was trying to point out is that the casual chatter in the thread needs to scale back because it wasn't actually related to San Francisco itself. If you want a space to hang out and chat casually with a few friends, there's the Offtopic subforum where you can talk as much as you want in your own thread. Of course, chatting isn't banned entirely, and a little casual talk is fine, but it shouldn't be the main focus of the thread.

The Beautiful Us subforum isn't designed to be a social lounge like that. The goal is for threads about cities across the US to primarily serve as discussions about the city and its events among people who actually live there (and write in their respective city threads accordingly).

As far as I can tell, no one was banned. He just removed chatty posts that had nothing to do with San Francisco or local events. From what I saw, the moderator simply asked everyone to stick to this going forward. It was done in a normal tone, without threats, arrogance, or anything like that. So, I really don't see the reason for opening this discussion.

Previously, this subforum didn't have strict moderation, so people got used to threads turning into private group chats. Now, this change feels like moderator overreach or some "kid with too much time" acting out. That's incorrect. Like I said, this isn't that kind of subforum, and LEGO is just working toward the intended purpose of the board.
Besides, the administration also gave instructions to move the subforum in this direction, and that includes the San Francisco thread.

Look, honestly, there’s really no reason to go after the moderator. There's actually a specific subforum designed for chatty stuff like that. I'd just ask you all to please stick to that.

Then you should really consider opening up a dedicated San Francisco chat corner... while we keep this current thread active, even if it eventually drifts away from being strictly about the local scene.
As for that red color, I think I'll pass on commenting on that..

Actually, discussions like this really belong in the Offtopic subforum. I’d need to check with the rest of the team first to see if we could even allow a thread like this on Beautiful us.

briskfox65 said:And apparently, every single one of these posts is just "nothing but insults and heavy off-topic nonsense."

Look, nobody actually said the posts were crawling with insults, so there's really no need to go around implying that's what happened.

Carol Hernandez94 said:Before the LEGO era really took off, the lineup was honestly incredible, especially with... Dow Chemical Who was the true soul of Beautiful Us? Honestly, they used to let things slide that even LEGO wouldn't dream of permitting in their wildest nightmares...

Dow Chemical was such an incredible moderator for you guys, but does anyone here actually realize she’s a woman? 😁 That's actually pretty interesting. 😁

Carol Hernandez94 Asks:
Because, like I was saying before, our little community is so tight-knit that everyone pretty much knows everyone else!

Look, we can't just let the topics be hogged by a tiny handful of people; they really need to stay open to anyone who actually wants to jump in and participate. By constantly policing the chat like this, he’s making everything feel so exclusive and closed off, which honestly just makes it useless for the rest of the community. At the end of the day, a forum is supposed to be a medium for the masses, not just a private club for a few regulars.

The whole concept behind this PDF shouldn't just be a massive pile of random chat threads broken down by individual cities; that’s not what I'm going for at all. Instead, we really ought to focus on broader themes that encompass various cities. The emphasis should be on... Cities.I really think that when we're talking about big cities like San Francisco, we could actually have enough material to break things down into much more organized, specific threads. It would make everything so much easier to navigate if we had dedicated spots for different topics, you know? For instance, we could have one section just for figuring out which neighborhood is actually the best place to live, another for the must-see landmarks and tourist attractions, or even a space for all the latest news and local happenings. I'd also love to see threads focused on the best spots for nightlife, hanging out with friends, or finding that perfect place to grab dinner. Personally, though, I find the idea of a nostalgia thread absolutely fascinating—there’s just something so special about looking back at how things used to be. 🙂

Look, I really feel like we need to rethink how we handle our discussion threads. Topics shouldn't just be some big, messy grab bag of random thoughts shoved together with endless daily small talk; that’s not what they're actually meant for, and honestly, if we keep going like this, they aren't going to hold their shape or stay relevant for much longer.

Carol Hernandez94 said:Then why don't you guys just open up a dedicated San Francisco chat corner? Seriously, let’s keep this main thread open even if we aren't talking about it like we used to...
I’m really going to stay out of any discussions regarding that red color... just let me be!

Feel free to start your own discussion thread over in the Offtopic PDF section, which is exactly what it's there for. 🙂 Just make sure you give their rules a quick read before you go ahead and open a new topic.

First of all, whether Dow Chemical is male or female really doesn't matter much... honestly, the fact that I don't even know their gender just goes to show there was never any real reason to find out since there hasn't been a single issue raised about it...
Secondly, the San Francisco discussion thread is open to everyone; anyone can jump in whenever they feel like it or if they need something, though it seems like very few people actually bother to participate. Our little handful of regulars is always here, though... I don't think you quite caught my drift regarding what I was trying to say...
Thirdly, the OFF topic threads are just plain boring...
But like I mentioned before, you guys just can't seem to wrap your heads around it, because you're far more preoccupied with the mystery of whether Dow Chemical is a man or a woman... Goodness gracious...

Carol Hernandez94, you guys have basically turned the Beautiful us forum threads into nothing but a giant group chat. Just because a thread has a city name in the title doesn't mean everyone can just hang out and talk nonsense like they’re grabbing a beer on a street corner in San Francisco. That's really not what this specific section of the forum is for.
Honestly, if you want to do that, feel free to start a thread over in Offtopic. I see plenty of those kinds of threads popping up in Offtopic anyway, and as a moderator for that section, I actually don't mind at all—it's fine by me.
In Offtopic, you don't have to constantly worry about whether you're staying on topic or just chatting away, and looking at the San Francisco thread, it seems like most of the activity there is just pure chatter anyway.

Well, if we don't keep this conversation about sports in San Francisco alive, it’s honestly going to vanish into thin air before we know it...

I feel like there's a real disconnect here—it's like one group is trying to steer the ship while the rest of us are just along for the ride...

We've been chatting on this thread for years now, sometimes getting a little silly or drifting off course without much rhyme or reason. Honestly, did anyone actually mind? Was anyone even filing reports over it back then?!

What is the actual purpose of this "Beautiful us" PDF thread?
If we decide to take everything literally, then we won't have anything left to talk about—for instance, if we discuss San Francisco politics involving Trump and his fellow mayoral candidates, that's off-limits because it's "politics." If we mention the Kansas City Chiefs or other local teams, that's "sports." If we start talking about food, it becomes "gastronomy"... beaches fall under "tourism"... and don't even get me started on humor. It would be like being forced to tell a joke based on a specific prompt.
Sure, there’s been some spamming that nobody outside of a tiny circle of regulars cares about, but I've noticed something telling: by my math—and looking at the metrics—a single post of ours can easily hit 100 views. I'm certain the head of Anderlon gives a damn about the traffic on this site... so who exactly is reading all this clutter that prevents people from actually contributing something constructive? Personally, I certainly don't go back to reread my own posts.
I realize we need rules and order, but I'm genuinely worried that strict adherence to the handbook will turn this into nothing more than a "tourist information bureau"—as > put it—rather than a vibrant discussion about the city that actually has some soul.

you guys really don't get it, it feels like I'm doing all the heavy lifting here while everyone else just watches....

we've been posting like this for years, just chatting away without any real structure or rules, and honestly, did anyone ever actually complain or report it back then?!

I mean, what's the big deal if the San Francisco thread is sitting over in Offtopic?🤷

I'm all for moving the San Francisco discussion to a different board so things can stay a bit more constructive over there.
I totally get why you guys love to chat, so just keep up that same energy, just maybe move the party somewhere else...😁

Carol Hernandez94 said:I mean, honestly, shutting down the San Francisco thread feels like a huge mistake. If we don't keep that conversation going, I guarantee you it’s just going to fizzle out and disappear forever...

Honestly, you guys just don't get it—it’s like we're sitting in first class while you lot are stuck in the steerage!

Honestly, we’ve been posting on this thread for years now, just rambling away without any real structure or set of rules... it's basically just a bunch of random chatter. I mean, who was actually bothered by it? Did anyone even bother to report the chaos?

They’ve been getting this wrong for years now, honestly. Before this whole decision even went down, we actually reached out to the owner directly. He told us personally that the vision for the Beautiful Us forum isn't to be some endless mountain of random chat threads, but rather a dedicated space focused on specific topics about our cities. What the moderators are aiming to do is dial back the constant chatter and really lean into more substantive, concrete discussions within the group. Don't worry, though—casual conversation is still totally welcome, but anything that doesn't tie back to the cities themselves or the core themes of the community is going to be scaled way back to keep things focused.

copperrider28 Asks:
What on earth would a "Beautiful us" PDF even be good for?
If we actually started taking everything at face value and being super literal, we wouldn’t have anything left to talk about! I mean, think about it—if we're discussing the San Francisco mayoral race and candidates like Trump or whoever else is running, we'd have to shut down because that's "politics." If we bring up the Kansas City Chiefs or any other local teams, we'd be told that's "sports." Even talking about food becomes "gastronomy," and mentioning our beaches falls under "tourism." It just keeps going and going! And don't even get me started on humor... it would feel just like trying to tell a joke when someone's given you a strictly assigned topic. It totally kills the vibe.

You really don't need to be quite so rigid about it! 🙂 I honestly think the PDF can work quite beautifully while still touching on all these different topics. If the moderators decide that a particular conversation doesn't actually fit under the PDF guidelines and belongs somewhere else, I’m sure they'll just move the thread or step in to handle it somehow. For instance, you could have a dedicated "sports in San Francisco" thread where people can chat about everything from local teams and clubs to general athletic activities and anything else related to the sports scene in San Francisco.

Look, rustydrifter10, you've made yourself clear—I was simply taking my thesis to its logical extreme. I view our "Beautiful us" thread—specifically this PDF—as a melting pot of everything related to a single city. I’m glad we see eye to eye on that; after all, any law is only as good as the judge who enforces it. In this case, the burden of interpreting and applying the "laws"—our posting rules here on this American forum—falls squarely on the moderators.
Just as some people argue that a lack of thread regulation leads to total anarchy, I would argue that over-regulation would turn this place into nothing more than a dry, sterile exchange of data.

I see this "Beautiful Us" thread—or rather, everything laid out in that PDF—as a giant, swirling mix of all sorts of different things that touch on life in a single city.

Look, a PDF can definitely be useful, and honestly, sometimes it’s exactly what you need, but there are certain topics where using one just feels totally wrong. 🙂

copperrider28 Asks:
Just like you all feel that letting the threads run wild has turned this place into total anarchy, we honestly believe that if we went too far with strict rules and heavy-handed moderation, we’d just end up with a dry, lifeless exchange of information where the soul of the conversation is completely lost.

Look, we really don't want some dry, lifeless PDF that lacks soul—you know, that special something that actually makes people want to come back to it. But honestly? I don't think what we have right now even touches the surface of its true potential, which is such a massive waste. It feels to me like this document could be something much bigger and more impactful if we just reached for it, you know? Instead, it’s all getting lost in a sea of unnecessary chatter.

I don't know what to tell you—it’s just not working. There’s a fundamental disconnect here between what people think they want and what the reality actually looks like. It’s like trying to run high-end software on a vintage desktop; you can try to patch it all you want, but the hardware just isn't built for it. Some folks seem determined to ignore the obvious flaws, but ignoring a problem doesn't make it disappear—it just makes the eventual fallout much harder to manage. copperrider28 says:
We don't want some lifeless, sterile PDF that lacks soul—the kind of thing people read once and immediately forget. That said, I don't think what we have right now actually hits its full potential, which is a real shame. To me, this document could be something much more significant—it has the bones to be impactful—if only we were willing to reach for it. Instead, it's getting buried under a mountain of unnecessary filler.

The rural landscape—it’s easy to dismiss it if you only live in the concrete jungles like San Francisco or even the political bubble of Washington, D.C.—but there is a specific, gritty reality to life outside the major metros that most urbanites simply refuse to grasp. It isn't just about "quiet" or "scenery"; it’s about a completely different social contract. In the suburbs or the cities, everything is mediated by services and infrastructure. Out in the heartland, you actually have to interface with the physical world—weather, soil, isolation—without a safety net always hovering nearby. It creates a certain kind of temperament—harder, more self-reliant, and frankly, less tolerant of the performative nonsense we see constantly in the big cities. copperrider28 says:
I’m one of those users who would truly love to see the San Francisco thread become actually constructive and informative—much like the threads they have for other cities.

I honestly think we hit a point where the discussions about San Francisco became just as constructive as anything else here. People were actually getting real answers—everything from parking availability to solid recommendations for restaurants and places to stay. I’m based out of Washington, D.C., and I spent a massive amount of my time dropping links and sharing photos of San Francisco all over those threads.
I know some people were complaining earlier, suggesting that those of us living stateside somehow stifle the conversation—but when I actually asked who exactly we’ve been blocking (and how one even goes about censoring someone else's posts), I didn't get a straight answer. I can't recall how many times I've welcomed every single person who joined the thread or encouraged others to weigh in... but at the end of the day, if people don't want to participate, there isn't much I can do to force them.
I’ve been browsing threads about other cities too, and let's be real—you see plenty of greetings, coffee shop chatter, and similar fluff everywhere. Don't try to tell me this is some unique phenomenon happening only here. It’s true that people occasionally veer off into tangents that have nothing to do with San Francisco, but I refuse to accept the idea that ninety percent of the content is just spam.
