If one were to look at it objectively—which is difficult, given how much people tend to lean on pure emotion when discussing legacy brands—it was always a bit of a polarizing machine. On one hand, you had that specific aesthetic direction that attempted to bridge the gap between mainstream luxury and something more... traditional. On the other hand, there were the mechanical quirks that seemed almost designed to test a driver's patience—or perhaps their bank account. I suspect some might argue it was ahead of its time, while others—likely those who spent too many weekends under a hood—would disagree quite vehemently. I don't have a strong horse in this race, per se, but I do think the nuance gets lost in the shouting matches.
