V/H/S (2012)

Just saw the first trailer popped up on IMDb, so figured I'd start a thread here.

V/H/S is that horror flick that actually premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
It’s hitting theaters here in the US on October 5th, 2012.

The setup is basically this crew of criminals hired to break into an abandoned house to snag some footage. While they're hunting for it, they end up watching a bunch of seriously disturbing tapes.

So far, the reviews are leaning slightly positive.

That sounds pretty interesting. I might have to check it out once it hits the shelves on Blu-ray or streaming...

Looks interesting, but I feel like they gave away way too much in the trailer... might end up being a dud.

Alright, here’s my two cents on this so-called "movie." It’s clocked in at about 120 minutes, but honestly? It felt more like a grueling 1,200-minute marathon. I probably wouldn't have even sat through it if I hadn't already committed to watching it with a few buddies.
The plot is just... there. It's aimless, incredibly dull, and—worst of all—completely disjointed. Most of it consists of these grainy VHS clips being watched by one of the criminals, but they don't actually connect to anything, other than the fact that some random murder happens in every single clip. It really isn't worth your time, and trust me, you aren't missing out on any cinematic masterpieces if you skip this one.
I'd give it a 2/10... and honestly, if it weren't for those few funny moments during the first half hour, it would have been an absolute disaster!

I popped this one on late last night, probably after 11 PM. I was home alone, and honestly? It creeped me out more than I expected. It actually turned out to be a pretty solid watch. The concept is a bit out there, and the POV filming style keeps things interesting. It felt a little low-budget at first glance, but the execution is top-tier. My rating: 7/10

If you can't get into the vibe, or if you try watching this with a group of friends, you’re going to hate it. Comedies are for hanging out with buddies; horror is definitely not a group activity.

If you really want the full experience, you should be watching this in some remote cabin way out in the middle of nowhere. Just my two cents. =)

Just a heads-up, I actually had goosebumps while watching this... which honestly doesn't happen for me very often when it comes to horror movies.

Okay, so as an anthology of short horror films, it feels a bit disjointed and uneven. Only really two of them stood out to me because of their core concept and how they built up the suspense. A few could've definitely been trimmed down, and yeah, not every segment hits the mark.

Even though that whole VHS glitch aesthetic feels a little forced at times, the approach totally works because the surreal effects look so convincing. It’s way better than relying on cheap, bad CGI... the practical makeup and editing here really work wonders!

And looking at the horror elements themselves—beyond just the slashers and the gore—it seems like these evil forces mostly strike during intimate moments. It basically turns those promising, fun nights for teenagers (mostly straight guys) into absolute nightmares by tapping into all those hidden anxieties...😬

That’s easily the most intense scene in the whole movie, though it's a shame they didn't show what happened right after she took out the other two, especially given how little the second victim was wearing 😁:

I already posted my thoughts on this movie over on the VHS2 thread since I couldn't find a specific section for it here.

Everything about it was gross. Just nasty scenes. Ever since that vampire girl scene popped up, I haven't been able to get anything else out of me—not that everything is totally hopeless, though. xD

That forest sequence really caught me off guard.

Definitely not watching this again. One time was more than enough back when I first saw it a few years ago.

Though, maybe I'll give the Red Band version a look.
