Last time I picked up a PC 2010., the guy told me there was no way I could run Windows XP on it, just Vista or 7... so I've been stuck using Windows 7 for about six years now, and honestly, I'm so used to it—just like I was with XP back in the day—that the thought of being forced to jump onto 8 or Windows 10 is pretty much a dealbreaker for me...

If I go out and grab a brand new PC, am I actually going to be able to install Windows 7 on it?

You might be able to... but if you're actually using that machine for gaming, you're stuck. Without Windows 10, you won't be able to run any of the new DirectX 12 titles. Right now, most games still offer DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 versions, but we're already seeing DirectX 12 exclusives popping up and being announced. ☕

If nobody's playing games on it, then you've got nothing to worry about.

I definitely want to play new games, I'm just feeling all nostalgic for gaming lately and I want stuff like BF1, Outlast 2 when it finally drops, GTA V and all that...

So does that mean I'm stuck with that damn Windows 10?

Yep, DirectX 12 is only supported on Windows 10—the other operating systems just don't cut it.

Why the attitude? You’ll get used to it eventually, and he'll probably be fine too. I mean, it’s still a huge step up from Windows 7

Everything you listed actually runs fine on Windows 7. The only catch is that you won't be able to play titles that are DirectX 12 only (right now, Quantum Break was the main one like that, though even it recently got a DirectX 11 version)

So wait, which games even use DX12 anyway?

I mean, my whole goal is to grab the latest releases and crank everything up to high settings using the newest tech...

Is it too early to pull the trigger on a new PC right now? Should I just hang tight for a bit?...

It’s not too early to say you're right about avoiding Windows 10 if you don't want the headache. 🤔
On Windows 10, you get both DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 support, whereas Windows 7 is mostly stuck with DX9 and DX11, for example.
What kind of rig are you even buying, and what's the damage to your wallet?

DirectX 12 games are just starting to pop up... and DX11 isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Like I mentioned, DirectX 12 is still optional in many titles—and sometimes even performs worse, look at Battlefield 1. There was briefly only one game that required DirectX 12 exclusively. You can definitely stick with Windows 7 for a while longer, but eventually, you'll likely need Windows 10 to run certain AAA hits.

I don't see how waiting affects your choice of OS. Your options are going to be the same regardless.

I'll probably drop maybe $1667 max on a new PC, but I haven't really thought about the specs, so I'll either ask someone to help me pick parts or just grab a pre-built like the one I got last time. If I absolutely have to, I guess I'll take Windows 10, but I've heard it's mostly built for touchscreens and that Windows 7 is still the king...

Don't go chasing complex builds 😵 Just hit us up when you're ready to buy, and the crew will put together the best setup for whatever budget you throw at them 👍

I'm looking to grab a new PC and basically want to be set for at least 6 years without having to worry about it again...
