I'm looking to build a workstation for programming that can double as a gaming rig, with an eye toward a future VR upgrade when the time comes.
The plan is to run a dual boot setup with Windows and Hackintosh. I've put together a list below, but honestly, I'm feeling a bit unsure if these parts are actually optimized for what I need, so if anyone has better ideas, please don't hold back. As for getting the Hackintosh side of things working smoothly? Don't worry about me—I'll handle all the compatibility headaches myself.
Here’s what I’ve got so far:

Specs:
ASUS ROG Maximus motherboard, s1151
Part #: 86022ADM
1,$222

Intel Core i7-6700K (8MB Cache, up to 4.2GHz), s1151
Part #: 85002ADM
3,$101

DDR4 16GB (2x8GB) PC4-27733 3466MHz CL16 Corsair Vengeance LPX black, CMK16GX4M2B3466C16
Part #: 83143ADM
1,$70

ASUS ROG GTX 980, 4 GB DDR5, 256-bit, 1279/7010 MHz
Part #: 62502ADM
4,$146

Corsair Carbide Series, MIDI, black, USB 3.0, no PSU
Part #: 38093ADM
$115

2x Dell UltraSharp U2414H Monitors, 23.8" FHD AH-IPS
Part #: 23673ADM
4,$111

750W FSP Fortron/Source Raider power supply, ATX 2.3, RA750, PPA7501401
Part #: 18910ADM
$231

Cooler Master Hyper 212X, RR-212X-17PK-R1
Part #: 11471ADM
$111

500GB Samsung 850 evo, SATA3, MZ-75E500B
Part #: 09829ADM
1,$165

Western Digital 1TB, P300 High-Performance, 7200 rpm, 64MB cache, SATA 6Gb/s, HDWD110UZSVA
Part #: 88067ADM
$137

Total: 18,$75

Any suggestions?

Regarding monitors... do they have to be a matching pair? You could do whatever, I guess. Maybe one Ultra Wide 29" or perhaps a 1080p TN 144Hz for gaming paired with a 1080p IPS for work...

crimsonstag84, thanks for the suggestion 👍
The 10xx series cards aren't supported on macOS yet, so I guess I'm stuck with the GTX 9 xx series for the time being. Still need to double-check things for the motherboard.
I've always just used two identical monitors—honestly, it didn't even cross my mind, but that sounds pretty interesting. I'll dig around for some other monitor alternatives 👍

I guess you might as well just grab a used GTX 970... those newer GTX 9 xx models don't really make any sense anymore since their prices haven't dropped at all, even with the 10xx series out now.

Exactly, there’s just no sense in upgrading to the 9xx series (the newer models).
