Alright, so I just got stuck with this assignment to design a poster about modern music, and here’s the kicker: I don't know the first thing about music. 🙂

Basically, if you guys could drop some images here—like, maybe show me the gear musicians actually use these days and tell me what it's called? Or honestly, anything at all that ties into the modern music scene would be huge. Thanks in advance!

"Modern music" is such a massive, vague umbrella term.
You really need to be more specific.

Look, just give me a list of instruments or names. I know the basics—like electric guitar or drums—but I'm sure you know way more than I do... It’s nothing crazy, I just need to print out these instruments for a project. My teacher mentioned maybe some clothing styles too, or stuff from pop or rap, whatever. Basically, I have to find an image that represents "modern music" and then write the name of it in German.😁

I mean, I know a little. Just a little.

Surprise the professor and drop this right in his lap...

An MPC3000 that was actually used and even bears the original signature of Dr. Dre. I couldn't track down a photo of the adapter, unfortunately...

Just look at this beauty. Wow.

And let's not forget...

The following instruments would fall under that category: hollow bone, bellows made from a calf's bladder, and a wooden flute.

I'm kidding...😉

Write me something about this specific instrument. Even though it looks like some ancient relic, it’s actually only about ten years old. It’s called a Hang. This thing is truly a unique story in its own right. If I recall correctly, they used to be more affordable, but those two eccentric geniuses just stopped making them altogether. Now, who knows, maybe they moved to the countryside to start an apple orchard or something. Back when you could actually get one, you couldn't just walk into a shop; you had to submit a formal "letter of intent." If they actually selected you out of thousands of applicants, you’d travel to meet them, and for the same price, you’d get a two-week stay to hang out, socialize, and really bond with the instrument before finally receiving one custom-made to your exact specifications. It was crafted by two guys over in Switzerland. They were so selective they even turned down world-class musicians. Honestly, I doubt even your professor has ever heard of this.
Here, take a look for yourself:

Give me a break 🙂

Just post a few pictures from the modern music scene—you know, some of the gear actually used in concerts these days—and label them. Like I said before, I recognize a few of them, but I'm sure you guys know way more than I do...

So, what, you’ve never even heard of Google or any of those other tech giants out there? 😁

Yeah, I've definitely heard about Google 🙂 I've already dug up a few things, but I know there's plenty more out there...

Look, at the end of the day, most music is built on pretty much the same foundation. You can't reinvent the wheel, no matter how hard you try. Beyond the usual suspects—guitar, bass, drums, keys, synths—you’ve got your saxes, horns, strings, woodwinds, whatever. And yeah, even if those extra layers are mostly just running through a Roland or a Yamaha, any modern performer worth their salt sounds way better backed by a small or mid-sized orchestra. You see it all the time on NPR pop specials at Carnegie Hall, or even when someone like Britney Spears hits the big stages and brings out a full string section, five trumpet players, and a whole brass ensemble.

Maybe try surprising your professor by throwing in some actual classical instruments alongside the modern gear. Then maybe they'll think you actually get what music is about.😁

Now, if you're looking for me to pull a miracle out of thin air—like making that meat pie up there—I'm definitely not your guy.

So you think this is modern music? Like some kind of unknown nonsense!

But have you actually sat down and considered the sheer infinite potential of an MPC? We are talking about a billion different combinations and a million octaves of sonic possibility. It is utterly insatiable.

In my own post alone, I listed three modern instruments that serve as the very foundation for almost all rap music, not to mention countless other contemporary genres... And don't even get me started on the turntable; that's no joke. 🙄

Look, here is Kanye West using an MPC. How exactly do you think rap music is produced? Does it just arrive via some FedEx delivery from Mars? Here, take a look and maybe you can learn a thing or two from him. (Note: A certain Phoenix with a great bust isn't exactly part of the standard studio setup).

I suppose you could also count the laptop—when paired with the right software, it stands as one of the primary instruments in modern music.

There are plenty of other instruments out there, too—today's musicians (the pretentious ones, anyway) love using all sorts of oddities just to look cool and "different." Here are some "modern" instruments used on last year's album by unknown:

I honestly think... Lady Gaga 🤔🤷 has been performing with that specific gear lately...

Heh, well, they're floating around somewhere, but I still find myself leaning toward a solid analog vibe if nothing else can provide that certain charm...

Moog Model D

Just watch where you click when you land on the site so you don't end up making a mess of things... 😁
