So, I picked up kickboxing back in July, and my left ankle is giving me serious trouble.
I’ve had pain in this joint for as long as I can remember. I haven’t broken it, sprained it, or even strained it—nothing like that. About a year ago, though, I landed awkwardly and was limping for about a week. Since then, everything has been the same: if I step just slightly the wrong way, I get this sharp, stabbing pain.
It’s becoming a massive hurdle in my training... 🙂
Since I started training, I haven't been able to hit the heavy bag at all. Even a light low kick sends a bolt of pain straight through the ankle. 🤷 My only option is the front kick. I’ve actually developed a bad habit because of this; during sparring, I refuse to lead with my front leg. I rely entirely on my back leg, which is tough because my opponent notices I’m not using my lead foot and they exploit it immediately. 😠
I went in for some X-rays two months ago, and nothing was broken. The doctor suggested I buy a brace to stabilize the joint and hopefully dull the pain, specifically recommending the McDavid support by Corpus. I’ve been wearing it, but it hasn't changed anything—I still can't hit the bag without pain. 😢
I went back to the doctor, and now he’s recommending an MRI. He thinks the issue might be with my tendons or ligaments, and if that’s the case, surgery might be on the table.
I wanted to see if anyone else here deals with something similar. If you do, please let me know what works. Honestly, I really want to avoid surgery; I've always been pretty nervous about going under the knife. 😲
The pain is localized on the right side, specifically involving the superior peroneal retinaculum or the inferior peroneal retinaculum.
PLEASE HELP!
