Hey everyone, quick question. I'm 16 and currently a junior in high school. I’m thinking about getting into wrestling. What do you guys think? Just a heads up, I’m on the shorter side—about 5'9" and 175 lbs. My main goal is just to tone up and lose some of this extra weight so I don't look as bulky as I do now. Any advice?

It’s truly never too late to pick up a sport for fun—in the vast majority of cases, at least...

First off, you aren't short. I'm only about an inch taller than you, and I don't consider myself short. In my view, someone is truly short if they are under 5'7".

Wrestling is a great choice, and you're definitely not too old. Find a solid local gym and get to work. You will build muscle and become strong. The weight loss and physique will follow naturally over time if you stay dedicated.

Take comfort in knowing that even the moderator of this sub had much worse proportions than yours, yet he still managed to learn the basics at some martial arts gyms. 🙂 Just a little joke, best of luck!

Jon Jones started his whole career when he was just 16—and look at him now. As for your height, you're pretty much right in the average range, definitely nothing too short.

Best of luck to you!

You’re sixteen years old and already a junior in high school...

School starts tomorrow, yet it's already 8:54 PM.
It’s getting late.

Train because you actually love it and want to, regardless of how many years have passed. Age is just a distraction created by some suits chasing fame and money while abandoning any real values. It might sound a bit hippie-dippie, but unfortunately, that’s just the reality of the industry.

Stay patient and good luck. 🙂

Is he short? No. But is he on the shorter side? Sure... Look, I'm about 6'2", so I consider myself average height, but honestly, does that even matter when you're starting training? He's only 16! There is still so much growing and developing left to do—certainly until he's 21 or 22, if not all the way up to 25. And regarding weight for that height? In most cases, guys like that develop incredibly well; they stretch out and lean out naturally. I know plenty of examples... kids who were stocky through early puberty and then suddenly turned into runway models overnight once they hit their stride. 😁

What you're basing this on feels pretty arbitrary—it doesn't really hold much weight:

According to recent studies, the average American adult stands at about 5'9" and weighs roughly 180 pounds.

So, by those standards, he's actually quite average (well, maybe just an inch under the mean).

It’s not too late—you're just gonna have to grind harder than the guys who've been at this since they were kids... but hey, take it as a challenge instead of a reason to quit.😉

I wouldn't call it arbitrary at all. Especially not here in California. From what I can see, there are just as many people shorter than him as there are taller, or roughly the same height—at least when looking at the 20 to 35 age bracket. It seems like only the older generation tends to be shorter than me. Honestly, I suspect that the study citing 5'9" didn't actually pull a representative sample, and besides, isn't that data pretty outdated anyway?

Who cares about the altitude anyway—it doesn't even make that much of a difference when you're out there training...🙂

Daniel Garcia said:Why on earth are you all obsessing over the height? Honestly, does it even matter that much when it comes to skiing?🙂

Look, I’m just saying what I see. I'm merely pointing out that the average isn't quite what everyone seems to be making it out to be. Is it really as high as they claim? I don't think so. 🙂
