Or is there any way to keep both the V-brake and the disc functional in the rear without ditching one? 😁

Why would you even want a stronger rear brake than the front? Physics doesn't work like that. When you hit the brakes, the weight shifts forward anyway. Especially in downhill racingβ€”you're already pitched forward, then you add braking force, and there's basically zero weight left on the back end.
A buddy of mine who races professionally uses a 140mm disc in the rear. It gets the job done.

Heh, I guess we all eventually have to get our hands dirty with those discs. I’m running the exact same fork and hydraulic setup with 185mm rotors, specifically the XT765s. Here’s the deal with my fork: after about five or six minutes of sustained braking, I’ll take a tiny two-second breather without touching the levers, and suddenly I’m flying through the woods at 22 miles/h. Honestly, once I pull into the foothills and spit on the disc, the thing is practically smoking.

Exactly my point!

On a descent from a local trail, after about 5 or 6 minutes of constant braking, then just letting off for two seconds, you're already flying through the woods at 22 miles mph. By the time I hit the bottom of the hill, my rotors are practically smoking.

In other wordsβ€”you installed top-tier brakes worth maybe $150-$200 on a junker with a fork worth maybe $30-$50?
Interesting priorities, πŸ™‚

To be honest, I didn't realize they were that cheap; I might have gotten turned around thinking this was the XCR model with the preload adjustment and remote lockout, though it's a 100mm travel fork. As far as I can tell, this version just comes in white http://www.srsuntour-cycling.com/dst...F7-XCR-LO.html

As for the brakes, I actually found some used ones online through an American retailer for about $85.

Interesting priorities. πŸ™‚

When Lewis Hamilton was asked what the most critical part of a car is, he pointed to the brakes.

Sure, the fork matters, but if you need to stop fast and stop right, the brakes are what count.

Sure, the front wing matters, but if you need to stop fast and hit the mark, it’s all about the brakes.

And when they asked Michael Schumacher what the most important thing in cycling is, he just yelled "MADNESS!!"
Because when I'm pedaling hard behind a city bus, there isn't enough BRAKE in the world to save me!! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‰

I mean, seriously, once I find myself pedaling right behind a city bus, there isn't a single brake in existence that could stop me!! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‰

Well, maybe that's why you have the bus to stop you instead. πŸ˜‚

You guys have no idea how much I make the day for those sitting or standing way in the back. πŸ€” Or maybe I just ruin itβ€”depends on whether they're rooting for me to pull over 😁, or not 😬

Sure, the front wing matters, but if you need to stop fast and reliable, the brakes are king.

Look, I don't care about the technicalities, but pairing massive, high-performance brakes with a flimsy, weak little front wing just isn't a recipe for success. It's a disaster waiting to happen, right?
But hey, if it works for him, who am I to judge? Five stars for that logic! πŸ™‚

I'm guessing that would be the case 😁

But hey, if it works for him, fine by me. πŸ™‚

Better to check the fork's actual rating and stay well below the limit.
