I’ve been putting off writing something like this for quite some time—people act like this forum is some sacred institution, that nothing can be changed, and that everything is perfectly fine just the way it is—but if you ask me, it really, really isn't.

I suppose I shouldn't have to explain the difference between a cause and a pretext. The pretext might be the situation with ex anais, but the actual causes run much deeper and go back much further.

Regarding her case (just as one example among many): the girl has been practically screaming for someone to just leave her alone for a while. And I’m not talking about some "spoiled princess" syndrome here; I mean she is expressing genuine distress in her posts that transcends the digital realm and mere forum banter.

In that light, telling someone to "just use the ignore button" feels a bit... well, a bit patronizing. Ignoring doesn't stop you from seeing quoted sentences from the person being ignored, nor is it right to tell someone who feels—I would argue—rightfully threatened to simply "pretend they don't exist."

And yes, she is very dear to me (even though we’ve had our fair share of intense arguments 😁) and I consider her a valuable member of this community (whatever happened to that famous "reputation" system anyway?)—so valuable, in fact, that I’m getting myself tangled up in this, even though it’s been made quite clear (and rather rudely) that I’ll get my ass kicked if I do it again. And no, I’m not hitting on her.

No, this isn't an attempt at advocacy, but rather—here is the actual reason for this post and why I'm risking the guaranteed beating I was promised: I am commenting on yet another instance of blatant inconsistency on this forum. It isn't working, and everyone sees it: they see how certain "captains" are allowed to engage in textbook trolling on serious and potentially useful threads while other non-captains get slaughtered by bans, they see the private connections involving local bigwigs and all that nonsense—all while reaching the absolute rock bottom of argumentation with 🙄 "if you don't like it, go join another forum."

It leaves a bitter taste in what should be a source of enjoyment—a place where people, finally, invest their time, effort, and resources in good faith rather than just for personal gain. It leaves a sense of sadness because, in the interpretations and comments here, all criticism is reduced to some low-level, petty John Doe mentality of "it's my way or the highway," showing a total failure to understand the sincerity, constructiveness, or even the specific nuances of someone's words.

It would be incredibly helpful if someone could strategically define where this forum actually wants to go, and what concrete tactical steps are needed to get there—including treating "business as usual" as a choice, which currently looks more like an editorially disoriented wandering from one case to the next. What is happening here simply isn't right, no matter how much people try to silence me or insult those who dare to speak up.

If the goal is to make this forum subservient to "His Majesty Clickbaiter," then fine; in that case, an "anything goes" approach is perfectly legitimate. Under those rules, authors like "I accidentally hacked his email and found out he's flirting with the neighbor's Doberman," "I'm 15 and have a Dick that's 10 inches long," and "Quote: from Hell, Jim Morrison died from drugs—the Mexicans killed him" become the ideal and most desirable members.

But, if the goal is to have any semblance of meaning, quality, or actual discussion, then someone at the top needs to sit down, reflect, and actually reach an agreement.

There. That’s it. Just turn up the volume; that’s my style, itditditditd.

Nicholas King, have you ever actually run into a total drama queen?
I’m not saying they aren't right about the core issue, I just mean their reactions are completely over the top.
Look, people, we were warned about this exact type of behavior, and we've seen it play out before.
What is it you guys actually want here?
Do you honestly think that if someone says something you don't like, you should be able to just tap a moderator on the shoulder and order a ban for them on the spot??
Are you even considering how that could easily be used against you?

I really don't know how else to put this: if you don't have the full story, then stop sticking your nose where it doesn't belong.
Who you happen to like, who you find charming, or whose posts you enjoy reading isn't relevant; it isn't an argument, and it certainly isn't a fact that holds any weight in situations like this.
It's fine to point things out, but you need to have a little faith that things aren't always exactly what they seem on the surface.
Do we understand each other now?
Being popular isn't some kind of magic pass that guarantees someone special protection or places them above the rules.

Nicholas King, you can play captain and boss around your buddies at your own house.
Keep it strictly to the facts here, please—if you actually have something concrete to say.

Nicholas King said:It just leaves this bitter aftertaste in something that ought to be pure joy—in something where people, acting in good faith rather than just chasing personal gain, finally decide to invest their time, their effort, and their resources.

I won't dive into the rest of the thread, and please excuse me if this is off-topic, but what was quoted here feels a bit extreme to me. Honestly, most people hang out on forums because they enjoy interacting with others without having to physically drive somewhere—it's a great way to play the expert and share advice, read those "my secret" threads, bicker over nonsense, play the moral high ground, flirt a little with interesting characters, or just coordinate a coffee, a beer, a chat, or even a trip... and so on and so forth. 😁
I mean, there's really no such thing as someone selflessly investing all that time, effort, and resources 🤣

Look, I realize I can only speak for myself (and maybe a few people I know well 😁). But I find it hard to believe that the motives of other forum users are somehow significantly more noble. Again, if I'm wrong, my apologies.

Look, I am talking about this exact thing.

Aside from whatever little authority you think you wield on this forum, what exactly gives you the right—or more importantly, the urge—to use such incredibly offensive rhetoric? Why do you do it so often to so many people? What is with this constant, sour irritability? It’s the kind of moodiness you might expect from some disgruntled clerk at a DMV office who spends her whole shift cursing her luck for being stuck in such a miserable job, but somehow, you bring that same energy here—to a place where we are all supposed to be "in the same boat."

Regarding the issue of leadership, just look at these examples: We are dealing with a serious topic here, yet cards are being thrown left and right, while our supposedly "approachable and reasonable" captain remains perfectly, suspiciously, spotless. Of course, now this will just be dismissed as whining, or advocacy, or whatever other "defensive dugout" excuse someone wants to use to shut down the conversation.

It’s not even the main point, but just so we’re clear: crafting a meaningful post takes mere minutes. Actually, scratch that—it takes a lifetime plus a few extra minutes.

If you're going to try and pin some kind of "lofty motivation for writing" on me, then I guess you have some serious issues grasping what I actually wrote.

When I brought up chatting—you know, grabbing drinks or coffee and all that—I wasn't talking about forum threads, but rather meeting up IRL. You know, when people actually decide to meet face-to-face after getting to know each other here... though, honestly, it doesn't really matter now.

As for the rest of your message, you're essentially throwing my own behavior back at me—except you didn't bother to set any boundaries for yourself. Internet forums—including this one (even if it isn't always called by this name)—were around long before the current generation of "I live online" types 😁 People were posting back in those darker days too 🤣

Nicholas King, my entire post was meant to be ironic. But then again, you know what they say: it takes one to know one 🤷

Regardless, it’s not particularly kind of you to claim I'm talking nonsense just because I didn't call you out personally; I made it very clear I wasn't targeting you 😢 Your words actually made me To get sick.
I truly respect the time, effort, and energy you pour into being helpful 🙏 🙏 🙏 if that's truly the case—I can't say for sure since I don't follow your every word, but I take your word for it because I respect you as a conversationalist 🙂

Nicholas King said:In this particular context, telling someone to "just ignore them" feels a bit... well, let's call it somewhat authoritarian.

True, but we can't just ban someone simply because they occasionally lose their cool and throw an insult. We can penalize them for trolling and verbal abuse, certainly. That should be done regardless of our personal—meaning non-moderator—opinion of that individual. Personally, I have quite a few thoughts regarding certain frequent posters here, but it would be remarkably foolish to issue bans just because I have the power to do so.
There are a million shades of gray.
As for that other ban, you explained it quite delicately. One user targets on-topic discussions over on the Politics subforum and the Lifestyle section (where both of them are regular, constructive contributors), waiting for topics where they can subtly attack someone's morality or decorum while technically staying on-topic. The other individual, however, went on a scorched-earth campaign across the entire site, quoting one specific person repeatedly just to troll. It’s all about the nuances. We can't just write black-and-white rules or ban people based on a whim. Even in the US, stalkers aren't immediately sent to the electric chair; they get the benefit of the doubt first, then a restraining order, and if they violate that, then things get serious.

And I agree with you that not all forum rules carry equal weight and the criteria aren't applied uniformly everywhere, but how exactly do you propose we standardize that? For instance, I’d love to wipe out certain troublemakers and hand out warnings to their cohorts, but that isn't my job description, so it is what it is.
This platform is far too massive a machine to speak so simply about its general direction. We are talking about tens of thousands of users and dozens of moderators, all of whom are unique individuals acting on their own judgment, overseen by admins. There is absolutely no chance that everyone will always agree on how something should be handled or sanctioned.

(which brings us back to the famous concept of "reputation," doesn't it?)

Don't you see how this sounds like you're advocating for certain users and taking a non-objective view of the community at large? Where does that lead? Where do we draw the line?

Personally, I try my best not to allow chatty off-topic banter or trolling to bleed across the whole site, given certain users' previous (and justified) reputations, even if that means ending up in an appeals process every single day.

So, are you suggesting that we shouldn't treat all users equally, or that we *should* take their history into account? Should we look the other way when a user openly insults someone just because they are a "useful" contributor (I happen to agree with your assessment of her)? Should we look the other way for you? Ultimately, should we be weighing a person's writing style, their past warnings, or their "reputation" when deciding how to act, or not?

Look, I take those factors into account right up to a certain point, and I try very hard not to cross it. Sometimes I stumble—take the case of Persephone's story and her expectations—but this site is a moving target. Some users are objectively trolls, some enjoy being insulting, and some just want to chat. That isn't a personal vendetta against them; it's reflected in their warning history and their style. However, no matter how much I might want to, I cannot overlook it when you tell someone "you're an idiot" just because you're the one saying it rather than some unconstructive chatterbox. Such statements must be treated equally because they drag the entire discussion down to a low level. It's the same with trolling or using ad hominem attacks, like saying "my mother makes better chili" just to dismiss an argument.

And I think you’ve seen firsthand that we tend to let high-quality contributors indulge in some decent off-topic banter—even letting those threads spin off into their own dedicated topics rather than just handing out bans. It's quite a different beast compared to that mindless chatter on some thread about "what did you have for lunch or what brand of condoms are you using." But, frankly, there has to be a line drawn somewhere. We can't just tolerate everything for certain people in the name of "reputation" while being absolute sticklers for everyone else. That simply isn't fair.

It’s not working; people see right through it.

They don't see it. They really, truly don't see it—not even if they had direct access to moderator tools or an admin password.

In principle, I’m on the same page as Nicholas King. I might not agree with every single thing he says, but there is something deeply fascinating about how some people are constantly told to "just deal with it, ignore them, let the fool be," while that very same fool gets patted on the back. Then, once someone finally hits their breaking point, suddenly it's time for a "fair" judgment.
Yeah right. Fair.

I remember being given that classic excuse: "He wasn't spitting on you, he was just attacking your opinion." That kind of justification really stuck with me. Because if that's the case, what am I, if not my opinions?
Then comes the follow-up: "Well, you insult others too; everyone does it." I love those casual, half-hearted insults tossed around. Believe it or not, we don't all behave the same way. Some people actually have the decency to respect the house rules when they walk through the door. Others act like tough guys by trampling over them. And those first types—when they do break a rule, they won't deny they broke it, but they'll certainly argue that it isn't true that someone else didn't break it too.

It is fascinating, though, how much tolerance is extended to people lecturing or using veiled insults, yet the moment someone snaps, they are labeled the villain. At best, the original offender gets a slap on the wrist. It ends up looking pathetic compared to the repetitive nature of the actual offense.

A society that spends all its energy fighting for the rights of the aggressor while ignoring the victim isn't a healthy society.

Who wouldn't feel nauseous facing that kind of mindset? But probably not the aggressor, right? That's just how it goes. It doesn't come naturally to me to constantly hear about the "rights" of the bully—how they're "misunderstood" or "socially maladjusted" or whatever—while the victim's experience is reduced to a shrug or a "well, maybe they should have just watched their tone."

The answer to the question in the title? It leads nowhere. Much like the state of things in this country.
I suppose the goal is to cultivate an army of trolls who specialize in passive-aggressive insults, rather than having users who, for the 236th time, try to help a frightened girl asking, "will it hurt the first time?"

Just so we're clear, I'm not jumping into this just because I've got nothing better to do; I'm commenting because I actually grasp what's bothering Nicholas King specifically, which is more than I can say for hollowtrucker77, who (once again) seems to be completely ignoring the actual substance of what's being written.

So, you're an expert on all these nonsense posts and you somehow have eyes on every single deleted comment too?
Are you also privy to the private chats between the moderators and the admins??
If that's the case, you're probably out there spreading rumors and causing chaos everywhere.

No, let’s be clear: not everyone here just posts mindless drivel in the chats. There are people who actually put in a significant amount of effort and time to ensure their contributions to this forum are constructive, so I really don't see the point in even debating that.

On another note, while I have the floor: do you honestly believe the mods and admins are actually trying to protect "sick stalkers"? Or is it possible they simply have no clue what is truly going on—and perhaps we should consider that not every forum member sees the full picture, given how much can happen "behind the scenes"?
It seems to me that a fair number of people here are just idling, waiting for some drama to unfold so they can pick a side and start tearing into someone. It’s as if nobody possesses the basic desire to actually ask someone how things really stand before jumping straight into direct attacks and whining; no one wants to uncover the objective reality lying beneath the surface. We ought to give that some thought. 🙂

Aside from leaning on whatever little authority you think you have on this forum, what exactly gives you the right—or more importantly, the desperate need—to use such incredibly offensive rhetoric? Why do you keep doing this to people? It’s that specific kind of bitter, quarrelsome attitude you’d expect from some grumpy clerk at the DMV who spends her whole shift cursing the universe for giving her such a miserable job, yet somehow she manages to act like we’re all "in the same boat" when it suits her.

As far as the leadership goes, just look at these examples: This is a serious topic where everyone is losing their minds, and our resident "good ol' boy" captain is acting as pure as driven snow. Of course, now it’s all just whining, playing lawyer, or whatever other "defense attorney" nonsense you want to call it.

you can talk all you want, but it's obvious you're just looking for some kind of social validation from a group you clearly value and wish would give you special treatment
it's funny because the people involved actually know how to speak for themselves, which makes your role here pretty questionable, if you ask me
I'm left wondering if you actually believe you can manufacture enough pressure to force moderation to go your way, but let me tell you right now: that isn't going to happen, and nobody is going to be a remote-controlled moderator for you
and while it might not apply to you directly, since you brought it up—that "captain" guy was banned and slapped with a strike without any mercy or special protection once he finally lost his cool
his reputation only helped him once he calmed down, apologized, and made it believable that he wasn't going to keep acting out like an idiot

Chloe Green61 said:Do you honestly grasp how this comes across—as if you're essentially campaigning to protect certain forum members while maintaining an incredibly biased, one-sided perspective on the community as a whole?

I mentioned "reputation" specifically as a piece of evidentiary material used within Persephone's story—so, I suppose, one should logically apply that same standard consistently even when a user's "reputation" is actually working in their favor—just to highlight how utterly absurd the whole concept is. But, since you went ahead and admitted yourself that you "screw up sometimes," I guess that’s enough for me. 🙂

So, what you're actually asking me—if I follow your train of thought correctly—is whether you're suggesting that we shouldn't treat every single person on these forums with the same level of scrutiny, or if, perhaps, we ought to be looking much more closely at everyone? It’s a bit of a nuanced question, I suppose—though I suspect you might be oversimplifying the entire dilemma.

I view this entire situation through the lens of airline loyalty programs—you know, the whole deal with frequent flyer statuses and tiered rewards. I won't go into an exhaustive breakdown of how or why that comparison fits, as I think the analogy speaks for itself. At this point, I'm not even talking about direct insults—that would be "the other side of the coin"—but rather the behavior of one specific administrator. While the others maintain themselves, this one individual feels the need to tell users they are "shitting the bed" or "sticking their noses where they don't belong." To me, that is just as insulting, and frankly, I can't wrap my head around why anyone would do it. I see absolutely no necessity for it, nor does it offer any tangible benefit when addressing people in a conversation. Look, regardless of how clearly defined a forum's hierarchy might be, it isn't a military chain of command. We aren't recruits expected to drop and give us fifty while some drill sergeant screams profanities in our faces.

I’ll say it again—this simply isn't good for the forum.

And I mean, I think you’ve seen it yourself—conditionally speaking—that we tend to allow some pretty high-quality off-topic discussions when they come from the real heavyweights around here.

I can only agree with that to a very, very limited extent—if I’m being honest. It would probably take me quite some time to dig up specific examples to prove my point, but there were plenty of instances that were just glaringly obvious and, frankly, completely unnecessary.

They truly don't see—no, they really, genuinely don't see—even if you handed them direct access to the moderator tools and the admin credentials on a silver platter.

What we have right here is more than enough to draw some calm, level-headed conclusions—really. There isn't some sort of "invisible" context lurking in the shadows that could suddenly shed new or different light on any of these specific examples. I mean, I guess you could argue otherwise if you wanted to be difficult, but honestly? What’s on the table is what it is.
