I’ve heard people talking about the idea of a partial ban on a subforum, and how one might actually be able to manipulate the system to get one. I’m curious, though—if someone were to successfully pull that off, what are the actual limitations involved? 😬

Specifically, my assumption is that you wouldn't be allowed to post in that specific section anymore, but would you still be able to read the threads or stay subscribed to them? And more importantly, could you eventually petition to have that "earned" ban lifted after a reasonable period has passed—rather than just asking for it to end in three days like, 🙂 "hey, can I come back 😬 now"?

Is there anything else a person should consider before attempting to play those kinds of games? 🤔

My thanks to whoever manages to provide some clarity first. 😬

Look, if you're dealing with a partial ban, you won't even be able to see the specific sub-forum that's been locked down from you, so it's pretty much invisible
and just a heads-up, if anyone catches you trying to bypass the rules by posting with a burner account, you're looking at a permanent ban, no questions asked
plus, any formal partial ban is going to stick for at least a year; don't expect them to just lift it because you decided to play nice or change your mind after a few months

if we catch you using an alt account, enjoy the permanent ban

So what happens with a permanent partial ban?

it’s pretty much exactly what his handle suggests, or perhaps we'll just have to wait until the sub moderators finally reach an agreement on whether they actually want to deal with someone who essentially brought this whole mess on themselves

Look, I basically handed them the excuse to ban me on a silver platter. I was dropping one-sentence replies while these guys clearly expect a freaking dissertation for every single post. That’s all there is to this whole ban situation.

I'm bored, scrolling through some old threads and stumbled onto this. I've got a question.😁

So, basically, if there's a partial ban, does that mean you can't even read the specific subforum? I guess what I'm wondering is, can people still read it if they aren't logged in? 🤷
For example, I used to browse this site all the time long before I actually signed up. Since anyone can view the boards whether they have an account or not, maybe someone with a partial ban could just read everything if they stay logged out? 😁

I'm thinking the answer is probably yes—you can read it if you aren't logged in. So, my actual question is: what's the point of a partial ban if you can just bypass the reading restriction by staying logged out? 😬

Exactly, darksailor2, once you've logged back in, you can just go back and read through the entire thread from start to finish
🙂
But what’s the point really? I'm assuming this is all just some technical glitch or a server issue rather than anyone actually sitting there with a malicious intent to be a jerk

I guess it’s just technical stuff. Probably isn't anyone actually trying to be a jerk.

Well, I guessed right then! 😁

Still, it feels weird. Why use a partial ban to stop someone from reading a specific PDF when they could just read it while logged out? But hey... maybe it's just technicalities! 😁

It’s probably just technically easier to block access to the file entirely than to let them see it while stripping away their ability to comment. Just pull the whole PDF.

Aha, I get it now! 🙏

Thanks, darksailor2 image :hnje hnje:
