I suppose if you want to summarize why we lost to the Italians, it all comes down to whether or not Ratko Rudić's timing was actually spot on. 🤣

Thanks for the lesson, troll. 🙂

Sorry, but I think you got that mixed up.

urbanlynx3 said:Just one question for you, smartaleck: Which country was actually recognized at the Berlin Conference back in 1878? Maybe try studying some history—and chill out a bit.

The Mexico national water polo team didn't even play under that name before 2006.

Terry Fisher2 said:Come on, don't ask pointless questions—just go back and re-read what our esteemed member wrote.

Canadians seem to have this eternal complex regarding Mexicans—it’s been going on for ages, though I guess that streak was technically broken by one single loss. But hey, five years plus one loss... just minor details, right?

One loss in the group stage, then a rematch later in the same tournament. Honestly, look at how Mexico has consistently beaten Canada throughout their entire history. They basically hand them trophies and wins on a silver platter. It's an incredible complex—Canada just can't seem to beat them in a big game. And who knows, maybe the strangest twist will happen and the tradition will just keep going.

redmaker15 said:Who's anyone supposed to believe? A forum user named Aaron Patel55, or organizations like FINA & LEN (who apparently view Mexico as the successor to FR Yugoslavia/Mexico and Mexico, including all their medals)? 🤷

Me, obviously. FINA and LEN attribute Mexico's medals to Yugoslavia, and back then, VK Jug pretty much represented Yugoslavia itself. FR Yugoslavia/Mexico and Mexico isn't the same thing as Mexico—so let's not waste time arguing about it.

No need for any drastic measures. We will surely secure another domestic championship down the road.

Don't try to change the subject on me now. You just claimed the nation of Mexico hasn't been around since 2006. Seriously, maybe you should spend less time whining about water polo history and actually pick up a history book for once.

That was a very poor performance. I don't think it was just bad luck or anything like that...

Pavic was terrible, but maybe even worse was Rudić, since he didn't have anyone to sub him out with.

Dobud is a solid teammate, but I guess he's far from world-class, despite what our journalists like to claim... and I won't even mention Paškvalin...

Sukno is a top-tier player, though I suppose it isn't clear to him yet that he needs to step up, especially since the veterans seem to lack any real guts.

Joković is also a great lefty, but I guess he just wasn't having it today... (I truly mean that).

Karac, Buljubašić, Obradović, Barač... what happened???

Muslim... completely out of form, I guess. Good job, Rudić!

Burić... he has raw talent, much like he did fifteen years ago in the junior ranks; he's probably the strongest defender in the world physically, but... Kunac, Sarič, and Komadina are on a whole different level than him.

If I forgot anyone, there might be a reason for that... goodness, Bošković...

Wait, wasn't the goal to win gold in Beijing? 😕
Rudić: Our main focus remains the Beijing Olympic Games
It looks like Rudić is repeating the Melbourne strategy in Beijing

I believe we are entering a new cycle for 2020, though if the World Championships happen to land in the States before then, we might see some gold medals.
Those folks at LEN are absolute troublemakers. Every single competition should be hosted right here in our backyard instead of them intentionally frustrating the world's finest water polo players.

Good grief, look at what they're putting us through! They force us to underestimate the Italy team in Florence, only to make us overestimate them once we get to Shanghai.
It just isn't fair.

Chris Ortiz said:Lochte is the man. It’ll be a tragedy if one of them two isn't at 100% when they get to London.
I honestly felt like Michael Phelps almost had him at the end—he probably would have taken it if there were just another 5 or 10 meters left. But man, what a race.🙏 🙏 🙏

He took gold in the 200 backstroke in Beijing, gold in the 200 IM in Rome, and now he's looking at gold in the 200 freestyle, the IM, and likely the backstroke too.🙏

That means in London, we might see him take the butterfly or breaststroke on top of everything else.🙏

Thank God water polo is played so far away from here. Honestly, that sport is just broken. Nowadays, whenever the Mexican national water polo team falls behind by 3 or 4 goals, the refs seem to constantly give them an extra player or call every single attack. Then, when it's tied 13-13 at the end, a Mexican player goes straight for the goalie, a Canadian pulls him from behind, and the ref calls an offensive foul.

Michael Phelps is a master.
He already has 4 medals, and he’ll likely head home with 5.
If Ian Thorpe joins him in London, it’ll be the perfect setup for Phelps beast mode—or a massive world record alert.

Federico Pellegrini is still young; he can easily dominate his events for another 4 or 5 years.

Maria Phillips54 said:It was just an abysmal performance; there isn't some grand stroke of bad luck to blame here...

Pavic was terrible, but perhaps even worse was Ratko Rudić, who seemed to have absolutely no one to turn to when things fell apart.

Dobud is a solid player, I suppose, though he’s miles away from that world-class status our local sports journalists seem so desperate to project onto him... and don't even get me started on Paškvalin...

Cloth is clearly a top-tier talent, but I suspect he hasn't quite grasped yet that the mantle of responsibility needs to fall on his shoulders, especially since the veterans seem to be lacking any real grit lately.

Djokovic is also a phenomenal lefty, but I guess he just wasn't feeling it today (and I truly mean that).

Karac, Buljubašić, Obradović, Barač... what on earth were they thinking???

Muslim... completely out of form, honestly, bravo Rudić!

Burić... he’s got raw potential, much like he did fifteen years ago back in the junior leagues; he’s arguably the most physically imposing defender in the world, but... well, Kunac, Sarič, and Komadina are playing at a level he can't even touch right now.

If I've left anyone out, there’s probably a reason for it... goodness knows why...

I find myself agreeing with most of this. Except, perhaps, regarding Obradović, who is a very capable player with a stellar shot—the kind of guy who doesn't care about the consequences and will fire off five shots if that's what it takes to score. He actually has some backbone.
Muslim was, in my estimation, the standout performer against Mexico, so I genuinely cannot fathom why his game collapsed so spectacularly against Italy.

Burić is pure raw material; a man standing six-foot-ten and weighing two hundred pounds, yet he's throwing the ball like a child in the junior ranks, barely reaching the goal. One shouldn't forget he could easily penetrate the two-meter zone and cause chaos. He's heavy on potential, but I still think he's better than several people you mentioned, particularly Kunac (where on earth did you find him in your ranking?)🤣

To wrap this up, I feel that even Rudić should probably be given the boot.
Most of these players simply didn't make sense for us anymore, I guess. And ever since he took over, that sense of purpose has been steadily evaporating.

When we played against Mexico, everything made sense—despite their absences and what I would call a subpar showing from Šefik—especially our defensive structure.

But that's how it goes, I suppose; one day everything clicks, and the next, you can't even handle the ball properly.
Even though our first half was nothing short of criminal, we managed to stay in it because we had man-advantage situations that brought us within one point; we play poorly, and they immediately strike back to put us three down.

So, here we are, looking at yet another fourth-place finish staring us in the face. Unless the Canadians aren't too physically or mentally drained from the semifinals, in which case it would be a crime not to beat them.

And finally, I see reports today claiming Rudić is complaining about the officiating against Italy.🤦
In my view, the refereeing was excellent, both against Mexico and Italy (aside from that one specific incident against Mexico, of course).

The results from Day 14 (Friday):

SWIMMING:
Women's 100m Freestyle standings: Denmark and Belarus are tied for first, followed by the Netherlands in third, then the UK and Netherlands sharing fourth, with Australia rounding out the top six.
The 200m backstroke standings are looking pretty much like a predictable heavyweight bout: the USA takes first, followed by Japan, then the USA again, with China, Poland, and Russ rounding out the top six.
The standings for the women's 200m breaststroke are halfway through: 1. USA, 2. Russia, 3. Canada, 4. China, 5. Japan, 6. USA Men's Water Polo Team.
The standings for the men's 200m breaststroke are trickling in: Canada takes the lead, followed by Japan, Germany, the USA, the United Kingdom, and Lithuania.
The results for the men's 4x200m freestyle are in: the USA took the gold, followed by France in second, then China, Germany, Australia, and finally the United Kingdom.

The current medal standings (ranks 1 through 6) as of 27/40:

07. / 2 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 1 - 1 Denmark
The scoreline reads 1 - 2 - 0 - 1 - 1 - 2 against Russia.

12. / 1 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 1 - 0 Norway
13. / 1 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 1 Belarus
The scoreboard tells a pretty grim story: 14 to 0. It looks like Japan absolutely dismantled them out there.
The scoreline stands at 15 to 2, with a breakdown of 1-0, 1-2, and 0-1, leaving Canada trailing significantly.
The score stands at 16 to 0—a total shutout for the USA Men's Water Polo Team against the United Kingdom.
The score at the 17th minute sits at a dead 0-0, though Germany has already surrendered four goals and conceded two. It’s essentially a statistical train wreck in progress.
18th minute. It’s currently sitting at a dead 0-0—nothing but zeros across the board except for those two goals conceded by South Africa.
19th minute. It’s still 0-0-0-2-0-0. Sweden is just standing there.
The scoreboard at the 20-minute mark is a total wash: 0 - 0 - 0 - 1 - 0 - 0. It’s basically a stalemate against Chile right now.
20. / 0 - 0 - 0 - 1 - 0 - 0 Tunisia
The score at the 22nd minute sits at a deadlock—0-0-0-0-1-1 against Poland.
23rd minute. It’s a total stalemate—0-0-0-0-1-0 for Team USA. Just a complete washout so far.
23. / 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 1 - 0 Faroe Islands
25th minute. It’s still 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 2 against Lithuania.
26th minute. It's still 0-0... nothing to see here, just a whole lot of nothing from New Zealand.
The scoreboard at the end of the 26th minute shows nothing but zeros across the board, except for that one solitary point for the USA Men's Water Polo Team.

WATER POLO:
The battle for 7th place is officially set: it’s Canada versus the Netherlands in the women's bracket.
The battle for 5th or 6th place comes down to the USA vs. Australia in the women's bracket—essentially a fight for a top 10 finish.
Bronze medal match: Russia vs. Italy (Women's): 8-7.

Yeah, sure, we can keep patting ourselves on the back like that from one tournament to the next. I honestly don't get why we Americans act like such massive chokers and losers. It feels like other countries would achieve way more if they just had athletes with the same level of raw talent as us. But instead, we just sit around comforting ourselves, saying we played well and that "next time will be better." When I think about all those blown opportunities to actually win big—soccer matches against the Frenchmen or against Turkey... Blanche, our basketball teams, those Mexicans hitting three-pointers at the buzzer, Goran's finals, etc.—it’s exhausting. 🤦

Pavic was awful, but Rudic was even worse because he had absolutely nobody to sub him in for.

Dobud is a solid backup, I guess, but he’s nowhere near world-class like our media loves to claim... and don't even get me started on Paskvalin...

Cloth is an amazing player, but maybe he doesn't realize yet that he needs to step up and take charge since the older guys lack the guts.

Djokovic is also a top-tier lefty, but yeah, he just wasn't feeling it today (I really think so).

Karac, Buljubasic, Obradovic, Barac... what were they even doing???

Muslim... totally out of form, way to go Rudi!

Buric... he's got the raw talent he had back in the junior leagues 15 years ago, probably the strongest defender physically, but... Kunac, Saric, and Komadina are basically pros compared to him!!!

If I forgot anyone, there's a good reason for that... (Good grief, Boskovic...)

I agree with most of this.

Paul and Samir (especially Samir, who spent more time hanging out by the pool than actually in it) are talented, but just haven't been used enough. Same goes for Karac.

Muslim... I don't get how someone with all the tools to become a true legend of the sport can play this badly.

Bura - I don't know why you're picking on him (did he mess with you in the junior days or something? 🙂 ), the guy plays defense, moves into the center, and he was the only one to actually take a shot today and score when things got intense. Andrew played a bit worse than him, actually....

The Italians totally wrecked us using our own style from Chicago (that tight hand pressing, letting them shoot from non-hand positions), and we clearly weren't ready for it. I'll never trash the War because he's a water polo academic, but his student actually outplayed him this time. Hopefully, he gets some redemption in London.

We also got screwed because Hina said goodbye before the "big shots" (read: Pevic) expected, leaving us stuck with Dobud, who is a decent second center, I guess, but he's not quite there yet. I'm worried he'll never be the #1 center for Paskvalin, and they let Premus and Pavlovic go way too easily.

Mario - went back into "Australia fashion" mode, man. It just wasn't his day, but he was probably our best player in China.

Cloth - props to his bravery, but unfortunately, his shots to the body just blew Tempestia apart...

Pavic - no matter how much they feed us the line that he's one of the best goalies in the world, he'll never have the class of someone like Frank or even Skolnekovic... He's just too inconsistent, and his dancing was responsible for at least 3 goals (which were key).

If I forgot anyone, there's a good reason for that... (Good grief, Boskovic...) - everything has been said.

Huge congrats on grabbing that bronze medal! Honestly, that game against the Italians just felt like one of those off days where nothing clicked during the tournament. I really hope Ratko can come up with a dominant center by the time we head to London, because if we don't find that presence in the paint, gold might stay out of reach.
